Michelle Wie's Very Awful Terrible Bad Day
Published 6/1/2007 by Memphis Bengal at Sports Frog
... As for the latest twist and turn yesterday, well, it was bizarre. She played for the first time in forever after taking time off for a mysterious wrist injury. And she played, in the LPGA event, only slightly better than a weekend hacker. I'm being generous with that assessment. She played so badly that a very little known rule came into play, that being the LPGA "Rule of 88". If a non-tour player shoots an 88 in a tournament, they are barred from the tour for the rest of the calendar year. It became important because Wie got to the end of hole 16 only two mere bogeys from getting to that score. What happened next? Eric Adelson at espn.com picks up the narrative:

Michelle Wie Conveniently Withdraws

... Let me get this out of the way first: I have no problem ripping on Michelle Wie. I feel she is fair game because of her parents, and because she hasn’t shied away from the spotlight and endorsement dollars. Until she tells all of the aforementioned parties to bugger off, she’s on my hitlist. Oh yeah, and did I mention she plays with the men when she has no business doing so? OK. On with the awesomeness. Michelle Wie withdrew from the Ginn Tribute on Thursday because of a low self-esteem wrist “injury.” It was quite a well-timed withdraw:

Michelle Wie Should Choose: Dolls or Golf
Published 6/6/2007 by Michael David Smith at FanHouse
... that Wie acted like a petulant teenager during a pro-am this week: Late in the round, Wie's energy level was nearly nonexistent, like a thermometer dropped in a bucket of ice. On the second-to-last hole, she actually plopped herself onto the grass and sat cross-legged in the middle of the fairway, fingering one of the dolls that dangled from her golf bag. If Wie wants to play with dolls, that's fine. Let her play with dolls. But don't do it during a golf tournament. She doesn't seem capable of handling the mental side of being a pro athlete, so she should take a day or a week or a month or a year or a decade off from golf and do things normal girls do. Then there are the thoughts of her playing partner, Alena Sharp , at last week's Ginn Tribute. "I kind of felt bad for her," Sharp said. "She didn't seem happy." If Sharp is right that Wie isn't happy playing golf, why is she doing it?
