A strange day for baseball

... . Over the next two days, all of MLB pitchers and catchers will be in Spring Training. As baseball fans, this should stroke our excitement. But we reserve those feelings, knowing today's congressional hearing and the subsequent fallout will marr our jubiliation for just a few more days. Then, damnit, it's time to play ball. * Jayson Stark live blog ( ESPN.com ) * MLB's drug policy ( ...

Bullet Points: Roster Moves, Book Club, Today’s Congressional Hearings
Published 2/13/2008 by Cory Humes at Comments on: Fantasy
Derek dropped me a line saying that he’d be a bit slow to the trigger today with the final catcher rankings, so I’m taking a stroll out to the mound to buy the closer a little more time in the bullpen. — Roster moves: Livan Hernandez to the Twins. After losing about 400 innings’ worth of Johan Santana and Carlos Silva, I suppose adding a veteran for stability wasn’t an awful idea. Hernandez shouldn’t be more than a streaming option in most fantasy leagues, though, in my estimation. Is Kris Benson about to sign with the Phillies? Kevin Mench inks with the Rangers, and ...

Clemens vs McNamee = Drago vs Rocky
Published 2/13/2008 by Cpt. Morgan at Cobra Brigade
I understand that this is terrible for the game, but the public "hanging" of Clemens is quite intriguing.  If you haven't heard, Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee are going toe to toe with the Representatives on Capital Hill today.  Jayson Stark is having a live blog about it over at espn...and it is simply bad news for the Rocket... • Rep. Waxman made it obvious somebody is going to be charged with perjury once this hearing concludes -- because "it's impossible to believe this was a simple misunderstanding. Someone isn't telling the truth." • He said that if Brian McNamee isn't telling the truth about Clemens, ...

Pettitte comes completely clean
Published 2/13/2008 by Jason at MY BASEBALL BIAS
image credit: New York Times Here are a few highlights from today’s Congressional Hearings: An overall observation: The hearing is coming across as a highly partisan event with the Democrats more inclined to believe McNamee and the Republicans more inclined to believe Clemens. There’s no reason a hearing like this should be partisan and is telling of the present political climate. It’s a real shame. The politicians wanted this hearing to help educate kids against using steroids. How, and in what fashion, will anything learned today protect youth from these harmful substances? The hearing is on the ...

Clemens/McNamee Hearing

... any doubt in his mind? ... What possible reason would Mr. Pettitte have to fabricate a statement about you, his friend?" Clemens: "Andy would have no reason to." Most of Cummings's questions were along this line. He destroyed Billy. McNamee's answers, for the most part, were short and to the point. He stumbled when he took offense to being called a "drug dealer"; he should have been contrite and added that if so, then Clemens was a "drug user". Jayson Stark blogged the hearing. New possible nickname for Clemens? The "palpable mass".

Clemens and McNamee on the hill
Published 2/13/2008 by Evan Brunell at Fire Brand of the American League
Clemens and McNamee on the hill Boy, Clemens sure took a beating today. Jayson Stark had a fantastic day live blogging the events, and if you want to catch up on it, definitely read over his posts on the subject . By the way, Brian McNamee also took a large beating, but his beating was more of his character. Clemens took the factual beatings — the beatings that mattered. Pie

Usually, you don’t see this level of giddiness following a two-hour musical remembrance of the Holocaust. Not that it wasn’t warranted. “Did you hear how we got the most applause?” were the first words out of The Chatty Chatty Princess’s mouth. “Yes, you did,” knowing precisely why. And it wasn’t for the reason she thought. We wound our way through other Children’s Choir members in the green room at Orchestra Hall, found our way out, and walked back to the car. Or at least The Voice of Reason and I walked. My 10-year-old probably thought she was walking, but was closer to twirling, despite never really going around in a circle. Meanwhile, I was preoccupied ...

Clemens: Andy Pettitte “Misremembered”

Roger Clemens testified that Andy Pettitte did not correctly recall a conversation they had in 1999-2000 about HGH use. Pettitte and his wife both testified that Clemens told Pettitte he used HGH and steroids. Pettitte later asked Clemens following Congressional hearings about steroids in baseball in 2005 what Clemens thought of his use. Clemens then told Pettitte that he didn’t say that...
