Prospectus Matchups: Hitting the Headlines by Jim Baker

... (and I’m extending the deadline to Sunday if you haven’t voted yet), let’s take a look instead at the headlines today. Because it’s never too late to celebrate a World Championship I used to take an extremely hard-line stance on drunk driving. At one time in my life, I thought that those who failed field sobriety tests should be given a shovel, made to dig a hole by the side of the road and then shot in the back of the head so that they tumbled into said hole. Then, a sign could be erected over the spot declaring it the resting place of another worthless scum who endangered fellow citizens with their lack of restraint. This, I reasoned, would make the drunk driving issue go away in a hurry. Of course, I had to counterbalance this with my firm belief in due process and, in the end, due process won out. So, it’s good news for

Role Model?

... I'm not saying people shouldn't be sad that he's dead, because they definitely should be.  But the rest of the drivers on the road that night are lucky that Hancock didn't kill one of them instead of himself.  And knowing that he had plenty of alcohol in his system certainly makes it less of a "tragic accident," as far as I'm concerned.  It seems like MLB and the Cardinals, especially given La Russa's recent DUI, should use this as a chance to come out against drunk driving some more--an obvious stance, sure, but one that apparently can't be overstated.

If Bobby were on the hot seat across town, it would put a serious crimp in my Yankee-hating ways. I just don't think I can pull for him to fail. ... In fact, the whole concept of the guy joining the roster tickled me to the point that I had to join in the fun. (With that whole water-to-wine trick, the Rams may want to extend an invite to crosstown favorite, Tony LaRussa. I think it’s safe to assume, though, that Leonard Little will be occupying the adjacent locker…) So, in the name of spreading a little holiday cheer, I’m here to offer a few more suggestions to Jay Zygmunt in his quest to fix whatever ails these Rams (this year, both figuratively and literally). ... in the dugout (Chicago, IL) - The Chicago Cubs just completed an incredibly important series victory over the rival St. Louis Cardinals. The 2-1 series win puts the Cubs seven games ahead of the Cardinals in the National League Central, further dimming the Cardinals’ hopes of winning the division.
