Appalachian State Mountaineers at Michigan Wolverines - Recap
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- What was supposed to be a tuneup turned into a stunner: Appalachian State 34, No. 5 Michigan 32. Julian Rauch's 24-yard field goal with 26 seconds left Saturday put the Mountaineers ahead of the Wolverines and Corey Lynch blocked a field goal in the final seconds to seal one of college football's biggest upsets. "We're still sort of shocked," coach Jerry Moore said ... [link]

MICHIGAN IS OVERRATED

... A pretty girl at the tavern just said that's the highest-ranked team ever to lose to a I-AA foe.  You can fact-check that yourselves and read about this colossal upset here - I'm going to see if she'll succumb to a lower-league competitor. -KD  ...

Should Texas Tech Be Worried?

... I'll admit it, I'm feeling pretty confident as the SMU game approaches, but part of me thinks that this feeling of confidence is a good thing, but I'm a worrier by nature. But this, coupled with the incredible upset of Michigan, should Texas Tech be worried about SMU? I hate to undersell any opponent, but what should be the Red Raiders' concerns: ...

Congrats to Appalachian State

... Congratulations to the Mountaineers. It's not often you applaud the efforts of a rival, but this is one case where it's warranted. The win not only reflects well on the Appalachian State program, but also lends a sense of legitimacy to the entire Football Championship Subdivision. ...

Open Thread: Game #1 Central Michigan (0-0) at Kansas (0-0)

Here we are, finally. Football is little more than an hour away, and while TV is not an option for anyone football is still here. The news of the day, and quite possibly the season, is Appalachian State upsetting #5 Michigan in the Big House 34-32. It is the biggest upset in my lifetime and, according to some, the biggest upset in the history of college football. It was quite a spectacle to watch, they out-played Michigan, pure and simple, and even though they gave up the lead late they ended up on top. I just hope our game isn't that exciting and we can put it away handily. ...

... During the game, I wondered why we didn’t see more of running back Mike Hart, who was clearly pulling his weight and playing well. According to the Associated Press, Hart suffered a thigh injury and that is why he went almost two quarters without a carry. Great, our one ray of hope has an injury. ...

Appalachian State Knows How To Riot!

... ...and we found some video of the Mountaineers fans carrying their goalpost across town to the school's Chancellor's house after their team's upset victory against the Michigan Wolverines . I'm sure that made sense at the time, it is interesting to watch the gang mentality take over these students however. I guess by not being able to go to the game, they had to vent somehow, and they chose this method. There were a lot of shirtless guys in the videos...but no women in a similar state of undress...not a flash or a bikini top at all. Shame really, what's wrong with kids these days?

Timeline of An Upset: Stanford-USC Edition

... of the two greatest upsets in the past twenty years of college football. All times are eastern and approximate. 8:45pm -- While watching playoff baseball, Ben browses through college football scores and says, with a bemused lilt in his voice, that Stanford leads USC early in the third quarter. I straighten up and ask the score. He says 9-7. Immediately, we search for the game on TV, flipping through various Fox Sports Channels, with no luck. We return to baseball. 9:05 -- My friend, Aaron, calls from the tarmac in Cleveland to talk about his Rockies. I ask him if he's holding a broom at that moment. As we're wrapping up the call, I mention, in an "oh, by the way" tone, that Stanford leads USC in the third quarter in Los Angeles. In the background, Ben says the Trojans still have plenty of time to score three touchdowns and blow away the Cardinal. 9:15 -- I call my dad and remind him that MLB has gone all out to ...

Momentarily, I will present to you the five things I think you'll see this Saturday against the WarPlainsTigerSociologists. First however, let's stop to take abrief look around the conference. Remember back in July when we were all sweating profusely and staring into our crystal balls, trying to predict the 2007 college football season? While a lot of predictions haven't gone as planned, some things have turned out just like we thought they might. For example: Darren McFadden may well be the best player in college football. ...
