mlnsports +2Players are checked for everything from heart murmurs to worms when they sign a major league contract, or even a minor league one. He has been through several organizations, which means several physicals. So either there are four of the dumbest doctors in the universe who missed the same thing, or, at 28, Joe Kennedy was doing something with 'roids or ephedra or some other performance enhancing substance, proving once again that MLB is still riddled with problems.

Some unfortunate news has came across the wire, former Rays pitcher Joe Kennedy has passed away this morning at his Florida home. His family was at his side, and the cause of death is undetermined [editor's note, by R.J. Anderson] Apparently Ken Rosenthal has reported the cause of death was results from a brain aneurysm. We send our condolences and prayers to the Kennedy family, at 28 Joe was far too young to be taken from them and the world. ...

He remained with the Athletics for close to two years then was claimed off waivers by the Arizona Diamondbacks (the Athletics were in rebuild mode and wanted to save Kennedy’s arbitration money). Having gone to bed early, Kennedy got up about 1:15 a.m. and collapsed as he left his bedroom. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
