Super Bowl 42---The National Take
Published 2/4/2008 by Memphis Bengal at Sports Frog
... Belichick had NO faith in Gostkowski. Or his defense for that matter (what is it, about a ten yard difference in field position if he misses?). But at that point, the way the game had played out, I thought there was a far better chance for Gostkowski to make that kick then convert the first down. And, yeah, New England probably could have used the possible three points later on. Bad move. Bad call.
And, if you were looking forward to the Bill Simmons morning after column, it's here:
"This time around, we were the Rams. We were rooting for the unlikable ...

... to worry about the meaningfulness of the regular season, but for the life of me, I cannot get this argument. If you take the number of games which become "meaningless" (because, presumably, one team has already locked itself into a playoff berth), and the number of games which have added import (because one or both teams are fighting for a playoff berth), I'm certain you'll find far more of the latter. Unforgettable. The one bit of Bill Simmons' 'Whoops' column that stood out to me? ...

There was a particularly important game of football last night
Published 2/4/2008 by PostmanE at The Postmen // A Sports Blog // Chicago, IL.
... – The talk at the day job today has been the defensive mastery on both sides of the ball. While that’s partially true, watching last night I didn’t feel like I was watching a defensive test of wills. I felt like I was watching two teams play relatively conservative football. Without sounding too much like Bill Simmons this morning (whose column does the graceful loser bit quite well, actually), where did the aggressive, let’s-see-if-you-can-stop-this Patriots offense go? When did the screen pass become such a regular part of their ...

Remember when Bill Simmons was kind of funny? That seems like a long time ago. Now he's not funny, not clever, and a little too self-important . There are waaaaaaaaaaaayy too many "we"'s in his Super Bowl column. Favorite part-of-the-team-fan nonsense quotes: You bleed for your team, No, you don't. They bleed for their team. Of course, there's one catch: You might never get there. There's actually no chance you will get there...because you are a fan. I took the approach of "we didn't deserve to win, we sucked, we choked and I'm not getting distraught over this when the city ...
Boston Fans, Still Struggling The Day After [Sad Pats Fans]
Published 2/4/2008 by Leitch at Deadspin
... After reading Bill Simmons' magnanimous column this morning, we were began to feel vaguely sympathetic to Boston fans. (Though the biggest revelation from his column is that, had the Patriots won, Simmons had set up to hang out with Tom Brady in his private entourage party room afterwards. The Giants winning might have saved Simmons career; that column might have been the one that finally sent people over the edge.) ...

Free Fallin’ Out Into Nothing

Free Fallin’ Out Into Nothing We kinda missed the MMQB morning link with all the server problems, but here’s what I think is a very well-written and gracious article by Bill Simmons. As a Seattleite who didn’t have a dog in this hunt, I’m just happy that the predominant sentiment seems to be that the Giants won, not that the Patriots lost. I was worried that it would go the other way, which would have been a cruel disservice to Big Blue. posted 2-4-2008 at 7:24 PM by ...

... - Bill Simmons, ESPN.com: "Everything you need to know about Super Bowl XLII happened on the Miracle Play To Be Named Later - you know, the third down on the do-or-die drive when Eli Manning ripped himself away from the entire Patriots defensive line (THEY HAD HIS JERSEY!!!!!!) and threw a pass that hung in the air forever like one of those sports movie passes, and even though David Tyree and Rodney Harrison had an equal chance of getting it, Tyree jumped a little bit higher, hauled in the football, trapped it against his helmet and somehow held on while ...
The Morning Tailgate
Published 2/5/2008 at STLSportsMag
When you woke up this morning didn't it just feel like a big day? I don't even think it has anything to do with the actual act of voting so much as it does the name - Super Tuesday. The more I think about it, the more I'm an advocate of coming up with nicknames for all days. Surely we've got 350 adjectives that we can assign to random non-holidays. ESPN has been trying to push this trend for years with names like Big Monday and frankly I'm on board. Rolling out of bed on plain old Wednesday sucks. Rolling out of bed on Ginormous Wednesday feels like something important is going to happen. Oh yeah, get out and vote. Remember a few months ago when there were some rumblings of the ...

... This retrospect on what it felt like to see the undefeated Patriots fall apart in Arizona has to be my favorite Simmons column of all time now. One thing I'm not entirely sure of, as I talk about this loss with my friends who root for the Patriots, is whose fingerprints are on this spectacularly offensive offensive collapse. It's easy to blame McDaniel, but didn't Belichick promote him because he was an unknown and could serve as a strawman enabling Belichick to have even more control over the team? It seems like the arrogant game plan that seemed to be governed by the premise ...

I'm Not Bitter About The Giants Win As Much As The Praise Of Eli
Published 2/7/2008 by Luol Dang! at The Smittblog
... I need to start saying that I'm really not making excuses here for the Pats. Simmons really summed up well the feelings I have about the Pats in that they didn't really show that much excitement or grit and were overconfident coming into the game. I'm not sure how it translated onto TV, but it was clear that the Giants came out on every play like they were shot out of a cannon while the Pats looked like they were just biding their time (and it almost worked!). The Pats performance was so lackluster and unimaginative that I felt like we were watching the Kansas City Chiefs or ...

Simmons, who attended the game with his dad, concluded his column thusly: The last thing we heard as we were walking (OK, hustling) out of the stadium right after the final play . . . was the sound of euphoric Giants fans chanting, "Eighteen and one! Eighteen and one! Eighteen and one!" Yes, it's safe to say the Boston-New York rivalry has been taken to new heights. As a ...
