ESPN Page 2 - Simmons: The forgotten pioneer
ESPN Page 2 - Simmons: The forgotten pioneer
You know Elgin Baylor as the longtime general manager of the Clippers. Blessed with a kind face and a happy smile, almost like the grandfather in a UPN sitcom, he's the Hall of Famer who sits with the other embarrassed GMs during the lottery every spring. I have made many jokes about Elgin over ...

There’s Nothing To Click Here: Owner Of A Lonely Heart Edition
Major League Jerk — For my money it doesn’t get any better than live comedy. I don’t particularly care for going to concerts (unless my brother evAr wants to invite me - I wouldn’t mind hanging out at least once or whatever. seriously, call me sometime) and I don’t make it to the movies all that often. I guess I just would rather spend my not-so-hardearned money at a ...

PM Roundup: You’re Going To Go Far, Kid
The Big Lead — Mariah Carey is 39 years old. That ain’t right. I’d say Nick Cannon had out kicked the coverage, but the guy did make Drumline. (Can you spell Ghetto Pass?) OK EliteXC people - It’s time to sell! Sell! SELL! Seth Petruzelli. Let’s try and make him look like he’s not a below average part timer. That kid in drag with the pink highlights is going to sell t-shirts! They might be fishnet, but he’ll sell’um. (FanHouse) In case you missed the sexy peculiar pictures of Seth Petruzelli from this weekend. (Deadspin) Kid gets stupid haircut to support the Rays and then gets suspended. ...

Did the ESPN Editors Miss Something?
The Fan's Attic — LA Clippers GM Elgin Baylor resigned yesterday or was fired. Who knows. Long has he been a punchline to NBA jokes, especially for Bill Simmons. Well, Bill Simmons is a gracious man who wrote a great column today about Elgin. Touching on his importance in the civil rights movement, the development of the NBA, and the development of players' rights. ...

Carrie Milbank The New Erin Andrews? [Blog Patrol]
FanIQ Blog — Look out Erin Andrews, Carrie Milbank is coming for you. [SI Extra Mustard] Are the Tampa Bay Rays bad for baseball? Only if you're an idiot sportswriter. [Fanhouse] Eli > Peyton. [Deadspin] Ah, yes. The classically subjective MLB MVP debate. [The Big Lead] Bill Simmons, who for years ripped Elgin Baylor as a GM, has some nice things to say about the man, and what a great player he was. [Page 2] An argument that all of the MLB postseason series should be best of 7. I completely agree. [Kallas Remarks] Guys in the NFL that you wouldn't want to piss off. [The Legend of Cecilio ...

Under the Lights: Still No Baseball
Major League Jerk — ... .  It will be back with the Dodgers and Phillies tomorrow followed up by the Rays and Sawks on Friday.  Word on the street is that even without baseball, the party will still be hopping at the MLJ Pool.  I even heard a rumor the Elgin Baylor will be stopping by since he has nothing to do tonight.  Maybe he’ll bring Bill Simmons with him.  As much as I hate Boston slurping, I always wanted to party with that guy. ...

Line by Line
freedarko.com — ... I did on Wade, someone's told me that when these things are sponsored by third parties, athletes can't officially support one candidate or the other. I'm going to err on the side of agreeing with several knowledgable sources and figure that, if a player did want to put himself in an utterly partisan position, he could. -Simmons absolutely kills it on the subject of Elgin Baylor. A little more profound than my take on Elgin in QM. -I'm planning some sort of FreeDarko book launch event here in Seattle. Am trying to get a handle on how many FD readers there are in my fair city, ...

The Invisible Denver Nugget Linas Kleiza
Pickaxe And Roll —   With the departure of Marcus Camby most fans, analysts and pundits agree that the key player for the Nuggets this season is Nene.  I have concurred with that belief as it is painfully obvious that the Nuggets are in big trouble if Nene misses another 60 games this season.  As much attention as Nene is receiving  there is one other player who I believe is vital to the Nuggets success this season who has yet to have a single article written about him and that is Linas Kleiza. Kleiza is an eye of the beholder player.  Almost everyone you talk to will have a slightly different view of the Vanilla ...

Pre-Naçional
ClipperBlog.com Blog for the Los Angeles NBA Clippers Fans — Bill Simmons has a stellar retrospective on Elgin Baylor that encompasses his entire career -- from his days when he was, literally, "moonlighting as an NBA player on weekends," to confronting segregation, to his contributions to the advent of free agency in the league: My theory is everything that happened after Elgin's playing career ended up obscuring the career itself. The Clippers hired Elgin to run them in 1986, and really, he has been something of a punchline ever since... If you're younger than 40, when you think of Elgin, you probably remember him wearing one of those Bill Cosby sweaters and wincing because the ...

SportsBrief- October 9
SportsHubLA — Steve Dilbeck of the Daily News wants to skip the appetizers (Phillies/Dodgers, Red Sox/Rays) and get straight to the main course: The Boston vs. LA (okay, Boston vs. Manny) series that everyone outside of Tampa and Philadelphia wants to see.  Rich Hofmann of the Philadelphia Daily News writes, as many have this playoffs, about the Manny Effect in LA.  He is, in short, a ton of fun and a gaggle of big hits.  People haven’t forgotten his departure from Boston and plenty suspect he’s angling for a new deal by being on his best behavior (probably true) but on the other hand, freed from the tension of life in Beantown, Manny is decidedly and genuinely more relaxed.  That must ...

Simmons on Baylor
Lakers Blog — Elgin_baylor_2 With Elgin Baylor now out as Clippers GM, there's been a lot of reflection on his work as an executive (not very good, though constrained by near impossible conditions for most of his tenure) and how even if the Clippers were smart to officially hand Mike Dunleavy the management job he's been doing unofficially for years , Donald Sterling and Co. completely botched his exit and dishonored his service - no real shock to folks around the Association. But if there's a silver lining to the contentious situation , it's that no longer do we have to think of Baylor in the context of his annual trips to the NBA Draft Lottery, but rather when discussing ...

Lakers Preseason Game 2: Welcome To Fresno
Forum Blue And Gold — Just a few things to look for as many of us bounce back and forth between the Dodgers and the Lakers tonight. • Will we get to see Gasol and Bynum on the court at the same time? I hope so. We need to at some point. • Lamar Odom. One preseason game is less than meaningless, but what we are looking for are patterns in the preseason. And the problem with Odom’s struggles the other night in a pseudo-point guard role is that there already is a pattern. Reed reminded us of that in the comments: I am bewildered as to why the coaching staff is trying again with the failed “initiator” experiment. What positives does he bring to that role? How does that ...

18 Links For You While I Hit The Links Like Tiger
JR, On Fire — What is Axel Dench doing wearing my jersey? Read below to find out, "what ballers are playing like bloggers." Good morning all. Today I'm hitting the golf links so I thought I better leave you with 18 links to view. It's the Crocs corporate golf day and I'm sure that Corey Williams will not be a Tiger woods out there. (I will let you know later how that went.) Enjoy your 18 and I'll see you (and Cattalini) at the 19th later today. - New Zealand Breakers could not remain undefeated at home. The Martin Cattalini-less Cairns win this one 122-111. game ...

Filler!
Yellow Chair Sports — Since nobody's posted in forever, I figured I'd throw something on here. This link is to a great Bill Simmons column on recently-fired Clippers GM and underrated NBA legend Elgin Baylor. Really interesting story, and it once again proves that few people in sports can touch Simmons when he's writing to his strengths.

Kind of an Anomaly These Days...
Thank You Isiah — ...but Bill Simmons' column on Elgin Baylor is really, really good. Read it.

Jones Blames ‘Boys Bodyguards On Pac’s Scuffle
SPORTSbyBROOKS — Jerry Jones went on Dallas radio today and said he blamed himself for being the “enabler” of Pacman Jones’ “violent scuffle” last Tuesday at a hotel.  Apparently though, Jones’ definition of enabler is a little different than yours or mine. Jerry Jones ...

Yo! Siding with the BASS-bowls
Twins Geek — I got the the email on Monday: Subject: Tough Break for the Phils They were the scrappy overachievers that managed to outduel the big money Mets late in the season for the second year in a row to represent the underdog league against the perennial AL home field advantage of the defending World Series champions Evil Empire Too. Now they'll just be the BASS-bowls who ruined the greatest sports story in the history of baseball. Except "BASS-bowl"[1] was a seven letter curse word, which I think you're going to be seeing used quite a bit here over the next few ...

The Painted Area — SI.com readers: Please go here to view the post on the Cavs' offense linked to by Paul Forrester. ***************************** Let's take a look at some notable basketball books scheduled to be released in the '08-09 season and a little beyond, including a few which are already out. We'll note right from the top that our release information may not be comprehensive or foolproof. We're making our best estimates based on what we could unearth on Amazon, along with some intel we've gathered from published stories here or there. 2009-10 Basketball Books Preview
The Painted Area — 2008-09 was a fairly thin year for basketball books, all told. Looking back at our preview from last year, it ended up that there were probably only a couple of true standouts in our opinion, David Falk's The Bald Truth and the Free Darko Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac, though we're still working our way through all of the tomes. We also liked When March Went Mad from Seth Davis and Red and Me by Bill Russell (which we managed to overlook last year - d'oh!), and then there really wasn't too much more out there of note. In fact, several of the books in last year's preview are making repeat appearances in this year's, as we jumped the gun a little ...
