BASEBALL: Stealing Barrett
Published 6/20/2007 by Baseball Crank at Baseball Crank
... They haven't said yet for who, but looks like it could be a great deal for the Padres snagging Michael Barrett from the Cubs once Barrett's feuds with Carlos Zambrano and Rich Hill made his position untenable with the Cubs. It's the 1980s Mets trick: swoop in when a player has some problem with his team that makes him available on the cheap. ...

Wednesday, June 20, 2007 (6/20/2007 09:27:00 AM) - Al The Cubs seem to have decided to blame Mike Barrett for their problems, and have dealt him to SD for Rob Bowen. Barrett is better offensively, but is a bit of a weakness behind the plate. This seems like a pretty obvious ploy to rid themselves of a distraction, and to pick up a generic catcher who won't rock the boat. ...

Barrett Traded For Delicious Peanuts
Published 6/20/2007 by Adam Godson at Bugs & Cranks
... It wasn’t a huge surprise that Barrett was traded today to the San Diego Padres. What was a bit surprising was that the Cubs dumped Barrett for absolutely nothing. Just a year removed from a Silver Slugger, Hendry dropped Barrett for backup catcher Rob Bowen, who is decidedly less awesome that Bruce Bowen, a minor leaguer and cash considerations. That’s about as close to giving away a player as I’ve seen in a while. ...

Wow, this came much more quickly than I could have ever dreamed. Nevermind. The official word is that Michael Barrett has been traded to the San Diego Padres for ...

Michael Barrett Will Now Be Fighting Padres Pitchers
Published 6/20/2007 by Fornelli at Foul Balls
We all kind of knew it was coming, so the news that the Cubs have traded Michael Barrett to the Padres is hardly a surprise. Controversial Chicago Cubs catcher Michael Barrett was traded to the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney. In return the Cubs will receive Padres backup catcher Rob Bowen and minor league outfielder Kyler Burke, who was San Diego's first-round compensation pick in last year's first-year player draft, Olney reports. The Padres will get cash considerations from the Cubs. From ...
Sources: Barrett Dealt To Padres
Published 6/20/2007 by Phillips at Rumors and Rants
... According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Chicago Cubs had become so fed up with Michael Barrett's antics, that they traded him to my San Diego Padres today, for backup catcher Rob Bowen, minor league outfielder Kyler Burke (who has a ton of tools but has struggled mightily after being drafted last year) and some cash. Looks like the Cubs and Padres decided to kiss and make up via this trade, after their bench clearing dust-up just four days ago. ...

... Not shitting you man. I read it this morning straight from sources associated with Buster Olney on ESPN.com. Tough break bud, but come on…you had to know this was coming. Look Michael, no hard feelings and all, but you were becoming quite the --what’s the term I’m looking for? Right, Clubhouse Cancer. You really didn’t see the writing on the wall? Zambrano didn’t just punch you in the face for no reason. Sure, he said he was sorry, but there was still literal meaning behind those punches. What else did he really have left to say to you? Judging from your black eyes and swollen lip…he already said enough. ...
Requiem For A Catcher

... We are gathered here today to pay respects to a fallen traded Cubbie. A guy who knew how to catch a ball (most of the time), and call a game (most of the time) and throw a punch (most of the time). It didn’t matter if the guy that needed punching was in White Sox black or Cub blue, his fists did not discriminate. A guy who went from being the face of the Cubs organization in cheesy McDonald’s commercials, to being sidelined in the dugout, all in the space of one month. We’re also here to honor his hot bod- all 6′3″, 210 pounds of it, including his ...
A Cubbie No More..

You just knew something was going to happen, didn t you? The Cubbies have traded Catcher Micheal Barrett to the San Diego Padres (who could use the catching help) for back up Catcher Rob Bowen and Minor League Outfielder Kyler Burke. Now according the Cubs GM, this has NOTHING do to with the Zambrano/Barrett boxing match. The fight had nothing to do with [the trade], general manager Jim Hendry said during a telephone conference call. The Rich Hill situation, that s normal Major League Baseball every night. It just happened to be seen and blown out of proportion. That happens all the time. It wasn t even discussed in-house about being an issue. We just felt like we were trying to shore up the position in a little different fashion, a little bit more defensively. You sure it has nothing to do with Barrett taking swings at the Ace of the Cubbie s staff? I find it a bit hard to believe but hey how ever they re going to spin ...
Cubs Deal Michael Barrett to Padres
Published 6/20/2007 by Charlie <info@buccosdugout.com> at Bucs Dugout: Front Page Posts
The Cubs have traded catcher Michael Barrett to the Padres for catcher Rob Bowen and 19 year-old outfielder Kyler Burke. Barrett had a much-publicized clubhouse fight with pitcher Carlos Zambrano a couple weeks ago, and he also picked a fight with A.J. Pierzynski last year. To be fair, there are probably about five hundred major leaguers who'd like to punch Pierzynski in the face, but Barrett actually did it, and he's been in two fights now, so he probably isn't the world's sweetest guy. ...

... Michael Barret - Yep, he makes the list two weeks in a row. Barrett has been traded to the Padres, which leaves me feeling disappointed that there won't be a reunion of any sorts with AJ Pierzynski this weekend. It also begs the question, will he retaliate against Chris Young for Young's dustup with former teammate Derek Lee? (Just kidding, of course. He would never try to hurt a teammate...) ...

I still do not think the Cubs have a chance at signing Zambrano after shelling out all the gauranteed dollars this offseason then going up on the auction block.
Is Zambrano a Yankee next year, or do the Yanks take the chance and get Buehrle from the White Sox now and think about Carlos during September after they fail to make the playoffs this year? How will it all go down????
