If I covered sports media in Boston . . . well, I wouldn't
Sports stories from Newsday —
Regardless of its reputation, the New York media always has been a bastion of reserve and sanity compared to our bratty cousins to the northeast.
Today's development: a venerable Boston newspaper columnist who moonlights on TV took on a famous Boston fan/Internet columnist who moonlights in a magazine on the subject of the Celtics-Lakers rivalry.
Here is the column by Bill Simmons that inspired this by Bob Ryan . . . apparently in his blog.
I officially have lost control of the sports media world.

Whatever you do today, don’t watch ESPN if you don’t want to hear about Joba Chamberlain’s start last night. Good grief. Full SportsCenter coverage on the main channel, then you get talking heads debating the merits of the 62 pitch no decision on ESPN2, and it wouldn’t surprise me is Classic put a temporary halt to the Celtics-Lakers marathon to show you all 62 pitches on a loop. Speaking of ESPN and the Finals, did you catch the Simmons piece ? This is my favorite part- Myth: L.A. and Boston were reborn this season with two legal megadeals. Truth: At least the Celts gave up ...
ESPN The Magazine Ignored Me :-*(
Cousins of Ron Mexico —
So I was reading Bill Simmons' latest offering yesterday afternoon when I noticed two things: 1. Chad Johnson took over as Editor-in-Chief of ESPN The Magazine for our Revenge of the Jocks issue Or at least I saw some variation of that on the Simmons' page. 2. ESPN The Magazine has an e-mail address at Gmail. (editor.espnmag@gmail.com) I found this odd because when I was doing the Master's Live-Blog Live-Blog and traded a couple e-mails with ESPN's Jason Sobel (Sorry, I'll stop name-dropping.) he had an addy @espn.com. What's up ...

... it’s Gonzo Journalism, or if it’s the writer’s mind that’s gonzo, and I mean completely. But a columnist who should know better, and who is such a Bostonian, you can feel the thick, fattening chowder oozing from his pores, has just put out for public consumption a story on the Lakers and Celtics that drops all pretense of objectivity. Written by “The Sports Guy” Bill Simmons in ESPN the Magazine, the title of this let’s take the T train wreck of an article says it all: It’s called: “I Can Be Objective About the Lakers. And, Objectively Speaking, I Say They Suck.” Well, if ...

... column. And they should be. If national writer from Chicago with a profile as big as his wrote that before the Bears played the Colts in the Super Bowl, I would have been furious, too. Even worse, his follow-up column was equally lame: after taking so much heat from Boston fans, he responded by basically making a bunch of weak jokes about the Lakers. ...
