EURO 2008 FINAL: Spain, Germany, and Canada TV ratings notes --- (for U.S. TV ratings, see MVN Soccer article also posted on BallHype) ---
Sogecable's Cuatro channel for Spain's 1-0 victory over Germany averaged 14.5 million viewers and an 81% share, setting "all-time records for Spanish television," according to Rolfe & Roxborough of the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. --- The last minute of the game drew more than 17.7 million viewers in Spain, an 88.6% share, marking the "most-watched minute ever in Spanish history."
German broadcaster ARD for the game drew 26 million viewers and an 80% share, falling "about 3.5 million short of the record ratings for the tournament," set by sister net ZDF during the Germany-Turkey semifinal last Wednesday (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 7/1).
TSN for its coverage of Spain-Germany averaged 1.01 million viewers in Canada, marking the most-watched Euro game ever on the net (TSN).

Perhaps there is an audience for soccer in America. The Spain/Germany Euro 2008 final drew a 3.1 overnight on ABC Sunday afternoon, the third highest overnight of any sporting event on broadcast for the weekend. There is no comparison to four years ago, when Euro 2004 matches aired on pay-per-view. The 3.1 is the best for any soccer telecast in the United States since the Italy/France WorldEuro 2008 ratings.

Through Monday, ESPN averaged a 0.9 cable rating with 1.1 million viewers for six Euro 2008 matches. Yesterday, Euro 2008 concluded with Spain's deserved win over German y. The match was very technical and tactical and I really enjoyed it. Any soccer player would have loved how precise and skillful the game was, and any sports fan could have appreciated the action.
