The Sports Retorter: Maybe the NBA did have it in for the Phoenix Suns
Fanster.com —
Stories of the NBA telling their referees how to officiate certain games, what players to call fouls against and what teams they wanted to win, are as old as David Stern’s tenure as commissioner and usually reserved for conspiracy theorists. These “hardcore fans” ranted and raved in the ’80s about a rigged draft lottery that landed the Knicks Patrick Ewing and complained in the ’90s about the “Jordan Rules”. While they stood on their anti David Stern soapbox, most right-minded NBA fans laughed off their accusations as mere coincidences.
For years, I refused to believe that the game I grew up on was tainted by ...

Since he’s already been to jail to serve his time and the league never backed him up, he’s out for payback in the worst way possible: he’s written a book about the officiating corruption in the league that names names and cites specific examples. Although the book doesn’t have a publisher currently, excerpts have reached Deadspin and they’re here for our perusal. ...

Portions of disgraced referee Tim Donaghy’s book, “Blowing the Whistle,” have been published on the web, and this makes for some compelling reading. The book has been shelved by the publisher, apparently due to the threat of legal action by the NBA. But Deadspin printed a number of excerpts, including this:

... Light, breezy reading for David Stern and company, I’m sure: “Bavetta went on to inform me that it wasn’t the first time the NBA assigned him to a game for a specific purpose. He cited examples, including the 1993 playoff series when he put New Jersey guard Drazen Petrovic on the bench with quick fouls to help Cleveland beat the Nets. He also spoke openly about the 2002 Los Angeles–Sacramento series and called himself the NBA’s ‘go-to guy.”‘ ...
Former NBA ref Tim Donaghy's book could be a good one
Blazers Blog —
... October 29, 2009, 9:15AM The proverbial stuff may hit the fan if embattled former NBA referee Tim Donaghy is ever able to get his book, Blowing the Whistle , published. Deadspin has a ton of juicy excerpts , including this one that should draw the ire of Blazers fans: The 2002 series certainly wasn't the first or last time Bavetta weighed in on an important game. He also worked Game 7 of the 2000 Western Conference Finals between the Lakers and the Trail Blazers. The Lakers were down by 13 at the start of the fourth quarter when Bavetta went to work. The Lakers outscored ...

Deadspin took a break from its war against ESPN to post a few high/lowlights from the unpublished Donaghy tell-all:
I remember one nightmarish game I worked with Joe Crawford and Phil Robinson. Minnesota and New Orleans were in a tight game going into the last minute, and Crawford told us to make sure that we were 100 percent sure of the call every time we blew the whistle. When play resumed, Minnesota coach Flip Saunders started yelling at us to make a call. Robinson got intimidated and blew the whistle on New Orleans. The only ...

In explosive excerpts published from a now canceled tell-all book, Donaghy makes damning accusations against his fellow game officials and the NBA as a whole. The excerpts were posted on Deadspin.com and include very long and detailed accounts of how Donaghy participated and ...
