Pisani Battles Back From Ulcerative Colitis

... knew something was wrong with me, but I was kind of embarrassed to see somebody about it. As time went on and I began to feel worse, I knew I needed to get well and had to see a doctor. I finally did and that’s when I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.
I was able to continue playing, but last July all the symptoms started coming back, only worse this time. I was going to the bathroom 20-30 times a day, losing a lot of blood and a lot of weight.

Ulcerative colitis ... no thank you. Hearing about Shayne Corson's painful battle with the disease was convincing enough. Today on The Hockey News' Web site, Fernando Pisani of the Edmonton Oilers goes into excruciating detail about his ordeal with UC, writing about "going to the bathroom 20-30 times a day, losing a lot of blood and a lot of weight" and looking like skin and bones to the point where "it was like I was staring at Mr. Burns" in the mirror. ... I doubt this is a permanent gig (if so, call us, we have space!), but Pisani has an interesting post up on The Hockey News concerning his battle with ulcerative colitis. It's a bit odd to say Pisani deserves to win the Masterton Trophy this season--I'm sure he and many others nominees, like Jason Blake, would have preferred not going through the illness and/or adversity--but it really should go to him. To come back and score 13 goals four months after losing 40 pounds and being unable to walk up a flight a stairs is...well, it's damn impressive. And inspirational. ...
