And Drive My Car Into a Drainage Ditch Singing Candy Apple Red

... Last night, pre-2004 World Championship Red was back on the scene. Re-emerging from the shadows, from the dark recesses of my subconscious. He shook his fists at the sky, knocked the gas grill off the deck (my apologies, also, to Aunt Billie, who I didn't know was standing two floors down beneath the deck having a smoke), threw beer cans at the TV and at least twice threatened to walk to Detroit to remove Julio Lugo's spleen through his nostrils. I don't give two horses what Lugo's batting this year or how many fresh-baked pies he delivered to the homeless shelters last month. I ...

... , a defeat that stung all the more because it wasted Boston comebacks from deficits of 4-0, 5-2 and 8-4. Such losses usually demand a scapegoat -- especially around here -- and last night's wasn't hard to find: Lugo, whose error was the key play in the inning (and who now has 10 in 33 games). Terry Francona defended his shortstop (Boston Globe), but the inevitable line of media questioning, which included resurrection of his three-error game in Toronto last month, prompted a why-are-things-so-negative-in-Boston? outburst from Lugo himself. To which the Boston Herald's Steve ...
Here Comes the Lugo Bashing

With the error on a possible double play ball in the 9th last night, Julio Lugo has once again become the target of the Boston media and a good portion of the fan base. Since J.D. is getting it done this year, many in the media need someone to blame when the Sox lose and Lugo has become that guy. Take a look at some of the bad press this morning: Boston Herald- Lugo Lets It Go Boston Globe- Fumble Leads to Sox Loss and Fielding Woes are Mounting for Shortstop Providence Journal- Which Shortstop Signing Was the ...
Kawakami : Surfin’ Barry Is “An Event”
Published 5/8/2008 by GC at Can't Stop The Bleeding
With all due respect to Julio Lugo’s attempt to record 30 errors (by the All-Star break), the San Jose Mercury News’ Tim Kawakami should’ve asked whether or not the Giants’ Barry Zito has what it takes to lose 30 games. As is, Kawakami calls Surfin’ Barry, losing pitcher in San Francisco’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Pirates Wednesday night, “a wide-eyed, slurp-throwing, head-scratching piece of Pitching Mound Theater”.
You don’t tune in to a Zito start to see if he’ll win, ...

... Experience in person. It wasn't too bad, though it only lasted 82 pitches: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. At least two of the outs he recorded were scorched line-drives, but it was still a solid effort. The run was the result of a Justin Upton error and some recklessly aggressive base-running by Alfonso Soriano. After Scherzer left, Chad Qualls and Brandon Medders were absolutely battered. • Julio Lugo is concussed and defensively challenged, so he sat in favor of Jed Lowrie. The 24-year-old Lowrie responded ...
