Figuring Out the Frontcourt
Figuring Out the Frontcourt
Some of the most interesting questions facing the coaching staff this season revolve around our big men. The frontcourt has depth and a diversity of skill sets. Figuring out how to organize that depth will be a challenge, although a far more pleasant challenge than figuring how to navigate last ...

Theo Ratliff by the Numbers
48 Minutes of Hell — ... This is a long-winded way of saying that the Spurs’ frontcourt rotation is not as perplexing as we might think, even though it goes seven players deep. Assuming good health, a three man rotation of Duncan-McDyess-Blair seems small but appropriate based on preseason performance. The fourth member of the rotation would be one head of the two-headed situational beast that is Bonner-Ratliff. Related posts: A Note of Caution: Work to be Done Figuring Out the Frontcourt ...

In his defense, I left the door wide open by asking a question that could easily be answered with a simple yes or no. I made sure to phrase my post-game question in terms of “either/or.” That being said, by no means was I the reporter who received the harshest treatment from Pop. But I’ll save that story for another day. Related posts: A Note of Caution: Work to be Done Figuring Out the Frontcourt ...

48 Minutes of Hell — ... not that concerned as to whether or not we get the W tonight. Although I’d love to get a win, the first 1/3 of the season is not about our record: it’s about meddling with the rotation and working out the tactical kinks. In some sense, I’ll be happier if the Spurs lose a close game in which we play stout defense than if we win a sloppy, offensive-minded affair. An Early Assessment of Team Defense
48 Minutes of Hell — ... shots near the hoop. The problem is neither with schemes (the Spurs typically dominate the defensive glass) nor with the personnel (the roster has more than enough shot blocking and rebounding talent). The team simply needs to adjust the minutes within the rotation and feature more of its traditional bigs. By Decemeber, I expect that these early wrinkles will be starch stiff. These are short term problems. Related posts: Theo Ratliff by the Numbers Figuring Out the Frontcourt ...

Duncan Will Not Play, Listed as Day-to-Day
48 Minutes of Hell — ... in his left ankle. He underwent an MRI that revealed no structural damage, and will be listed as day-to-day headed forward. Although a bit ominous, this is likely to elicit a fair amount of overreaction throughout the media. Duncan’s long-term concerns are his knees, not his ankles. That being said, I’m glad the team is being overly cautious. Related posts: If you haven’t heard… Two Big Wins: Spurs and Toros Figuring Out the Frontcourt ...
