... This is a long-winded way of saying that the Spurs’ frontcourt rotation is not as perplexing as we might think, even though it goes seven players deep. Assuming good health, a three man rotation of Duncan-McDyess-Blair seems small but appropriate based on preseason performance. The fourth member of the rotation would be one head of the two-headed situational beast that is Bonner-Ratliff.

Although I’d love to get a win, the first 1/3 of the season is not about our record: it’s about meddling with the rotation and working out the tactical kinks. In some sense, I’ll be happier if the Spurs lose a close game in which we play stout defense than if we win a sloppy, offensive-minded affair.

The team simply needs to adjust the minutes within the rotation and feature more of its traditional bigs. By Decemeber, I expect that these early wrinkles will be starch stiff. These are short term problems.

Although a bit ominous, this is likely to elicit a fair amount of overreaction throughout the media. Duncan’s long-term concerns are his knees, not his ankles. That being said, I’m glad the team is being overly cautious.
