 Finding Johnny Cueto
I wrote about Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez for the my Sunday Reds Insider for the paper. The theme: You can find good players, or at least potentially good players, in different ways. To get Volquez, the Reds gave up Josh Hamilton, a high price to pay. To get Cueto, they spent $3,500 and trusted the instincts of a very good scout. The Reds were looking to fill out their Dominican Summer ... [link]

Odds and Ends: Signing Johnny Cueto
Published 4/5/2008 by Sarah Green at MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
... If you're a GM, just how do you get your mitts on a talent like Cueto's? Courtesy of Reds Insider, we have a peek at the story of the scouting and signing of the Reds rookie (is it still too soon to call him a "phenom"?). Cincinnati's then-director of international operations, Johnny Almaraz, squeezed in an early-morning look at Cueto before his flight out of the Dominican Republic. Liking what he saw, he signed the 18-year old righty for $3.5K. (For contrast, the following year the Mets ...

Steal of '08: Reds Paid $3.5K for Johnny Cueto
Published 4/6/2008 by Will Brinson at FanHouse
Filed under: Reds, NL Central, Cincinnati, MLB TransactionsThere is an incredible story about scouting talent from Reds Insider (via MLB Trade Rumors) that was released yesterday, where John Fay points out that sometimes there's a distinct difference in how various prospects -- particularly in the increasingly global nature of today's baseball world -- arrive to the majors. Free Kenny Lofton

Kenny Lofton's reluctance could cost him Major League history Well, he's not exactly free, so don't feel sorry for him. He's had his opportunities: the Reds offered him a minor league deal, and the Rays offered him a one-year/$1million deal. He declined both of these franchises for which he's never played.

Phillies waste Eaton's quality start

I already regret praising the Phillies bullpen in my previous post. The Phils lost 4-3 to the Reds, with the bullpen and offense squandering an actual quality start by Adam Eaton. Eaton was unable to hold a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 8th, giving up a home run to the mighty Corey Patterson, and Chad Durbin walked two batters and gave up the game winning run on a strange final play.
