Fisher signs with Lakers
The Lakers could use some of the old glory these days, and it's coming in the form of Derek Fisher. The Lakers and Fisher were close to an agreement Tuesday night on a three-year contract, likely worth about $16 million. Fisher became a free agent July 2 in a rare development when he was released from his Utah Jazz contract — giving up the remaining three years and $20.6 million — because

Unbelievable Fish can still command this kind of money, especially at his age.  Great guy, but as many have noted ... he's just not very good.

I assume Kobe is due for a huge Christmas present this year.

That's a lot of money for a rapidly declining player, so I generally agree with you guys, but I think he provides two things that can help this team: 1) steadying influence and leadership for two young point guards and 2) if they do make the playoffs (i.e. not trade Kobe), he always pulls a few great moments out of his ass in the postseason. It's also possible that I'm delusional from listening to my Lakers fan roommate/cowriter. That said, the Lakers have a lot of other needs (post presence at both ends and a real secondary scorer) that they should have addressed with this money.

I have to say I think his leadership and influence is overrated. He used to yell at Pietrus when he was the one who screwed up.

Man, his game is just ugly too. Sucks the life out of the building everytime he tries to pull a Kobe impersonation. He's the point guard who doesn't pass.

I definitely don't like his game; his last season with the Warriors I would jokingly yell "shoot it!" everytime he touched it.

Also agree that his leadership and influence are overrated, but he'd have to be General Patton to live up to those standards. A lot of that comment was based on Javaris Crittenton being a really, really raw point guard, so having anybody around with experience would help him mature.

Breaking News: Lakers Finalizing Fisher Signing
Los Angeles Lakers — ... Lakers Finalizing Fisher Signing The Lakers could use some of the old glory these days, and it s coming in the form of Derek Fisher. The Lakers and Fisher were finalizing an agreement Tuesday night on a three-year contract worth about $16 million. Fisher, who turned 33 Monday, will get most of the Lakers mid-level salary-cap exception to give the team a steady hand at lead guard while youngsters Jordan Farmar and Javaris Crittenton learn their trade. Fisher became a free agent July 2 in a rare development when he was released from his Utah Jazz contract — giving up the remaining three years and $20.6 million — because he wanted to relocate to a city where 1-year-old daughter Tatum could get optimal care for her rare form of eye cancer. Los Angeles can provide that, and Fisher can provide the Lakers with triangle-offense experience and a shoulder on which good friend Kobe Bryant can lean. Fisher changed agents over the weekend to be represented by Rob Pelinka, Bryant s agent. ...
