 Flagrant Fouls and Ejections Links0
After watching the Lakers battle the Jazz in Salt Lake City yesterday, i made plenty of observation. One of those came as soon as I saw Ronny Turiaf get ejected for fouling Ronnie Price. Does it make sense, of course not, take a look. [link]

Crazy call, I have no idea which game the refs were watching.  Im not worried though, I think even with Kobe's back issues the Lakers will blow out the Jazz by at least 10 on Wednesday!

I agree. I think Utah won't get the unreasonable calls that they got in Utah, and I don't think they will get as many fouls called against the Lakers. Things will balance out and if it's a straight basketball game then the Lakers are at a gigantic advantage.

Unreasonable... you mean like Gasol NEVER getting called for a 3-in-the-key? As far as I know, that rule still exists. Maybe the refs should call that.

ya, mr fan, i think they should call that three in the key... but then they should also call every push off on the offense on Derron Williams, every elbow by Matt Harpring, and every over the back on Carlos Boozer... apparently, Utah fans hate homecourt advantage after one game as much as LA fans hate homecourt advantage in Utah after 2...

It's not homecourt advantage when the Lakers still get the benefit of the doubt in SLC. The Jazz win at home because they (for some odd reason) play much better there... not because of help from the refs.

As for calls to be made... every hook on Kobe. And every Gasol push.

And maybe, just maybe, they shouldn't be calling fouls on the Jazz on an Odom drive when no one touches him. Or a foul on the Jazz when Vujacic flops back every other play as if he got elbowed (note... he didn't).

And the FT discrepancy has been a pain... the Jazz are driving to the hoop as much as/more than the Lakers. And while everyone mentions that the Jazz foul a lot, no one seems to mention that the Jazz also get fouled a lot. Or they did...

well... let's see.... Utah "did" play much better at home, until they went down by 19 at halftime in game 6... hook on kobe = slapping of the hands and hand checkin on matt harpring not being called... fouls on odom, do u remember when kirilenko got an and 1 when lamar odom apprently fouled him on a dunk (odom was 2 feet away from him on the play)...vujacic clearly got hit in the face, i suppose last night when ronnie price or ronnie brewer (don't remember which 1) ran over him it was a flop also right??... ft discrepancy, utah had the most personal fouls in the league for the regular season, how could they possibly shoot more free throws than the lakers in utah??...

with all this being said, they made an amazing comback yesterday and simply started playing a bit too late... nice series tho, great fight til the end...

Actually, Odom was right next to him. I haven't seen a replay, so I don't know if it was a foul or not. But Odom was right there. The last game, Vujacic might've been hit (I didn't see the whole game, not sure). But in that OT for sure, it was a flop. Utah also shot a ton of FTs this season (aka they got fouled a ton)... and I know they weren't just settling for jumpers in the playoff series.

Yeah... playing the whole 1st quarter the way they did doomed them. A lack of urgency on their part... highly frustrating.

I pretty much wrote on the same theme as well. Such calls based on player-floor contact is unacceptable.

I think the biggest mitigating factor was that it was WAY after the whistle.  There was a foul on Fisher (I think) and Price just went to the hoop and Turiaf clobbered him.  If it was in the normal flow of the game (i.e., not after a whistle) it prob would have been just a flagrant 1 or just a good hard playoff foul.

On Home Court Advantage And Refereeing

A pointed look at the state of refereeing, and its influence on the incredible home court advantage in the NBA. Also, a critique on the assessment of flagrant fouls is given. Perhaps motivated by the Laker loss in Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals.

What’s the Deal With the NBA Contact Ban?
An old criticism of the NHL was that once the playoffs started the referees looked the other way and nary a penalty was called. Now, in 2008, the opposite is happening in the NBA playoffs. For some reason the league decided there will be no excessive contact whatsoever. They will not let the guys play. It’s a decision that’s led to a horde of flagrant fouls, lots of testy chest ...
Above The Rim: Home Cooking
The fact that Utah, the team that fouls the most in the league this year, shot 20+ more free throws than the Lakers is fairly spurious — but odd refereeing aside (including that flagrant 2 pictured above by Ronny Turiaf, which really was a flagrant 1 to me), the Lakers killed themselves by not making the free throws they got and getting away from Lamar Odom and Derek Fisher late in ...
Flagrant Fouls From The NBA Playoffs
Yesterday afternoon during the Lakers/Jazz game, Ronny Turiaf sent a message to the Jazz. And that message was you won't go in for a layup even long after the whistle has blown, no sir. That's because it's the playoffs, where NBA players suddenly decide it's time to play hard and earn their paychecks, or something like that. Anyway, the funny thing is I can barely remember any flagrant fouls ...
