What the deuce happened?! 2007 Quarterback Review

Then again, that’s usually what happens when a quarterback project gets playing time his first year, especially considering he was making the jump from 1-AA. Thankfully, The Revolution’s play on the field showed that he has potential. Yes, he had some awful interceptions, but he also made some amazing throws, including a beautiful (and effortless) deep ball that Troy Williamson dropped, and a pass to Mewelde Moore as Jets defenders dragged him down that Moore turned into a touchdown (demonstrating my

Pennington is a better thinking QB than Losman (who don’t get me wrong, has a cannon), and was rated as such in terms of efficiency even though their stats weren’t that different. In Thomas Jones, the Jets get a *proven* NFL back versus a *prospect* in Lynch. I don’t have time to address every position on this team, but just because you think you have a better team, doesn’t mean you do.

... . Yep, you read that right, the dude needs the team doctor to prescribe him some Ritalin (and if he won't do it, maybe Shawne Merriman's doctor will). Rivers believes his issues toward the end of last season he completed an NFL-low 47.1 percent of his passes over a five-game stretch could be traced to his inherent hyperactivity getting the better of him. "I tend to get a little speeded up," he said. To his credit, Rivers was still one of the league's best quarterbacks last season, ranking better than Tom Brady, Steve McNair Brett Favre and Ben Roethlisberger in terms of total value, according to Football Outsiders . That said, I don't think Football Outsiders had a stat for "spazzing out between offensive series and it's effect on a player's performance." If they did, chances are Rivers would rank pretty high. I recall during the Chiefs-Chargers Sunday Night game several instances of Rivers actually trying to rip his helmet o

Actually, I doubt he really wants to be traded so much as he just feels frustrated that he wants to go out a winner and doesn't think the Packers' front office is taking the right steps toward that. But it still raises an interesting question: Would you want your team to trade for Favre? Statistically speaking , Favre is still an above average quarterback. But he's not one of the league's elite quarterbacks anymore. By my count, there are five NFL quarterbacks who are unquestionably better than Favre right now: Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Marc Bulger, Carson Palmer and Tom Brady. Another 10 quarterbacks might not be unquestionably better than Favre right now, but they're at a point when there's no reason their teams would want Favre: Donovan McNabb, Marc Bulger, Philip Rivers, Steve McNair, Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Leinart, Eli Manning, Vince Young, Matt Hasselbeck and Alex Smith. The official definition, "This number represents the total number of points scored due to plays where this QB passed or carried the ball, compared to a replacement-level QB in the same game situations." Baseball stat afficiandos will recognize something similar to VORP (value over replacement player) at FO's cousin site, Baseball Prospectus.

That being said, Washington went into Green Bay and played the Packers to a standstill. The defense deserves a fair amount of credit for the team's success, but don't sleep on Campbell, who has the look of a future star. Oddly enough, the weakness of the team has been the run game, as Clinton Portis has struggled with injuries and last year's breakthrough Ladell Betts has been curiously ineffective. Some of it clearly has to do with the slew of injuries which have ravaged the offensive line, but the backs deserve some of the blame as well. 4. This could be because passing definitely seems to be more effective this year than in year’s past. Last year Green Bay posted the same DVOA and it was 21st. So that passing number maybe a bit misleading, though it’s still clear the dirty birds pass better than they did last year. They also run far less effectively, to no one’s surprise. Likewise rushing is down this year across the league- that -12.1% would have been good for 28th last season. So the drop off there isn’t as steep either, though we can certainly say the Falcons have gone from a dominating rushing team to a below average one at best. So one might be content to stop here. The conclusion could be “Joey Harrington’s arm is not enough to make up for losing Michael Vick’s legs.” But we won’t stop. Let’s take a look at the QBs: ...
