We all have an opinion about Barry Bonds' ball that broke Hank Aaron's home run record. Some feel it is a piece of history that belongs in the Hall of Fame. Others believe it is the embodiment of a cheating culture - not just in baseball, but in professional sports overall. [link]

September 17th, 2007 At halftime of tonight s Monday Night Football Game in Philadelphia, Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon were split on the proper fate of the ball Barry Bonds hit to break Hank Aaron s All-Time Career Home Run Record. The ball was purchased at auction for just under $756K by fashion designer Mark Ecko, who has announced that an online vote will determine the ball s fate either to be A) Bestowed to the Hall Of Fame in Cooperstown, B) Branded with an asterisk, or C) Banished to outer space on a rocket ship. This was the exchange: Kornheiser: If they blast it into space, they should blast this fashion designer into space with it. Whether you like Barry Bonds or not, this is a historic home run ball. Nobody asked us). So what’s the big deal? Two things: 1) It’s a baseball. We have never, ever, ever understood the fascination and prices associated with this type of thing. A complete and utter waste of money and everyone’s time. The artifact isn’t what makes the moment; it’s the memory. The final selling price for No. 756 was $752,467, well above most predictions. Ecko had not even taken possession of the ball before setting up a Web site that lets visitors vote on which of the three outcomes they think the ball most deserves. He plans to announce the final tally after voting ends Sept. 25. "I bought this baseball to democratize the debate over what to do with it," Ecko wrote on the Web site.
