Layoffs! (And Stuff)
Drunk Jays Fans —
LAYOFFS! No, seriously, Metronews.ca is reporting that not long after employees heard the news about Ted Rogers' passing, two thirds of the Jays' front office sales staff was laid off, or, to put that in Rogers' Newspeak, they were right-sized for the current economic reality. "Sources in professional sports told Metro," writes Marty York, "that no sports franchise in history has laid off as many employees in one day as the Jays did Tuesday." That's... kind of not good. Like, if Ricciardi and Beeston really are bluffing about this lack of money shit, they're really going a long way to keep up the ruse. (Bravo, ...
"Operation Shutdown" (Still) Proceeding As Planned [Derek Bell]
Deadspin —
... Former Blue Jay/Padre/Astro/Met/Pirate Derek Bell was arrested last night in his hometown of Tampa and charged with four counts of possession of drug paraphernalia. It was his second drug-related arrest in three years and I haven't read a lot of statements we've read that are sadder than "Arrest records show he lives in Valrico and is unemployed." It's enough to make you feel bad for him, until you remember his most famous major league moment and then the smiles come back again. Ah, memories.... ...
Derek Bell Is in Drug Trouble Again
FanHouse —
by Pat Lackey Filed under: Astros, Pirates, NL Central, MLB Police BlotterOnce upon a time, Derek Bell was known as a decent baseball player that had an awesome mustache. Hitting in the pitcher-friendly Astrodome in the late 1990s, he usually hung around 20 home runs a year and even occasionally drove in 100 runs in a season. On his career, his OPS+ is 99, which means he was almost exactly average over his 11 seasons. In 2001, he did something stupid. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates. After a terrible 2001 season, the Pirates informed him in the spring of 2002 that he'd have to win his starting job back. Bell responded by telling the ...

Walkoff Walk —
... Hey kids, it landed with a sickening thud.
WHO said this during a contract holdout with Oakland in the early 90s: "If they want to pay me like Mike Gallego, I'll play like Gallego." Of coursew it was Rickey Henderson. Of course Gallego was his teammate. Read more good Rickey quotes here.
DOES anyone else think that Derek Bell was set up by Glenn Davis? Well you're wrong, he was.

Former Mets OF Arrested Again
Mike Silva's New York Baseball Digest —
Former major leaguer Derek Bell, who played for the Mets in 2000, was arrested on Monday night on four counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to My Fox Tampa Bay “arrest records show he lives in Valrico and is unemployed. Bell was also arrested in Tampa in 2006 on a cocaine possession charge”
Bell is most remembered for living on a boat and bicycling to games at Shea. You also may remember him beating the Mets in 1998 and mouthing “oh my God” as he watched it leave the Astrodome.
