Sad news: September 19, Associated Press : NCAA champion hockey and lacrosse coach Ned Harkness has died. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute says Harkness, who won NCAA championships in 1954 with RPI and in 1967 and 1970 with Cornell University, died Friday on his 89th birthday. Born in Ottawa, Harkness also was head coach of the National Hockey League's Detroit Red Wings and the first president and CEO of the New York Olympic Regional Development Authority. He died in Rochester, N.Y., where he was living. He recently had suffered a stroke.
