Coach Joe Gibbs said the move was not meant to send a message to starting corners Shawn Springs and Carlos Rogers but was simply a chance to add depth. The Redskins have signed corners Fred Smoot and David Macklin this offseason. Butler, sources said, signed a one-year deal for the veteran minimum ($595,000).
