... LB Marcus Washington, who was cleared for full practice participation this week, was rested yesterday with a sore back, Director of Sports Medicine Bubba Tyer said. The minor ailment is unrelated to Washington's hip problems.

... Redskins backup quarterback Mark Brunell, coming off labrum surgery, said he is ahead of schedule in his recovery and can throw longer with more regularity. He was cleared for full practice -- although he is monitored closely -- and said, "I expect to be 100 percent by training camp."

... Continuing to add depth at defensive back, the Washington Redskins signed free agent cornerback Jerametrius Butler yesterday. Butler, 28, joined the team's workout and knows he faces steep odds to crack the roster. He has been injured most of the last two years, and was released Tuesday by St. Louis. Coach Joe Gibbs said the move was not meant to send a message to starting corners Shawn Springs and Carlos Rogers but was simply a chance to add depth. The Redskins have signed corners Fred Smoot and David Macklin this offseason. Butler, sources said, signed a one-year deal for the veteran minimum ($595,000).
