The Mid-Week Links
Fang's Bites —
... will be on tonight and then others will play on NBC Universal's networks throughout the time leading up to the Olympics. I'll more on that later. First, let's do some sports media links so I can do some work and then record a podcast this afternoon. Sean Leahy of USA Today's The Huddle blog says CBS' Screamin' Gus Johnson apologizes for a comment he made during Sunday's Jacksonville-Tennessee game. Michael Hiestand from the Nation's Newspaper writes that Fox is seeing ratings jumps in many markets for this year's World Series. CNBC's Darren ...
Wednesday afternoon buffet
Get The Picture —
... I know there hasn’t been much snacking here this week, so here goes.
A good look at BCS economics, through the prism of Boise State, Oregon and Alabama.
This is a darn shame: “Notre Dame’s 40-14 rout of Washington State on Saturday night wasn’t exactly a win for NBC. In drawing 1.4% of U.S. TV households, NBC’s coverage had the lowest rating of any show on the four major broadcast networks last week.”
If Mark Richt does go shopping for a new defensive coordinator this ...
Gus Johnson sorry for 'Getting-away-from-the-cops speed' remark
Shutdown Corner —
Tennessee running back Chris Johnson broke a 52-yard touchdown run on Sunday,
which is the kind of thing you can't do without excellent foot speed. That kind
of speed, Gus Johnson calls "Gettin' away from the cops" speed.
As you might imagine, Gus took some criticism for the comment. Consequently,
he has apologized:
"If there is a perception of racism in this analogy, it is not coming
from me. People of all races have run from the law. However, to those who are
offended, I apologize." ...
Brett Favre Ratings Beat the World Series, Handily
The Big Lead —
... Favre, Ratings Bonanza: Brett Favre returning to Lambeau Sunday resulted in incredible ratings for FOX - 17.4 rating and 29.8 million viewers. It is estimated that 39 million were watching around 7 pm. That easily bested anything the World Series has done so far (evrn though the World Series numbers have been vastly improved over last year). Without competition from the NFL Sunday night, game four of the World Series generated a 13.5 rating and 22.8 million viewers. Game five’s numbers were impressive, too. Favre’s return to Green Bay ...
Notre Dame not ready for primetime on NBC
Sports Media Watch —
... the rain delay to end. Ratings and viewership for Saturday Night Football on ABC were not immediately available, but regional coverage featuring Texas/Oklahoma State and USC/Oregon likely trounced Washington State/Notre Dame. NBC drew better numbers for football on Sunday night, even though Sunday Night Football had the week off. Football Night in America , which led into the movie National Treasure , drew 3 million viewers on Sunday night. Sources: The Futon Critic , USA Today
