The brew crew definitely have the minor league prospects, but why do they need him?  They are not even in contention . . . .

FOX: Rosenthal - Dodgers join Brewers in pursuit of Sabathia
Published 7/5/2008 at BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog
FOX: Rosenthal - Dodgers join Brewers in pursuit of Sabathia The Brewers aren’t the only team pushing hard for Indians left-hander C.C. Sabathia. The Dodgers also are heavily in the mix, according to major-league sources. However, the Dodgers’ bid for Sabathia is complicated by their pursuit of Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson as a replacement for the injured Rafael Furcal, sources say. To get Wilson, the Dodgers would need to trade the Pirates some of the same players that the Indians want for Sabathia, leaving Los Angeles with a choice of one deal or the other. ... While ...

Dodgers Interested In Jack Wilson, C.C. Sabathia
Published 7/5/2008 by Tim Dierkes at MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
According to Ken Rosenthal, the Dodgers have jumped into the fray for C.C. Sabathia.  They don't have a Matt LaPorta-caliber prospect, but they could make a substantial three-player offer.  The Dodgers, being a big market club, could try to sign Sabathia before he hits free agency. Rosenthal says the Dodgers are simultaneously pursuing Pirates ...

Raising the White Flag
Published 7/5/2008 by Brian (noreply@blogger.com) at Ontario Street
It's pretty obvious. If you're looking for an announcement that we're going to start trading guys, you won't get that until we make our first trade. But I think it's fairly obvious at this point. -Cleveland GM Mark Shapiro, 7/2/08 The white flag was officially raised by Cleveland this week with 77 games remaining in the season. The decline of this year’s squad has been one long, painful slump after another. If it wasn’t the offense, it was the bullpen. If it wasn’t the bullpen (though it usually was), it was the starting pitching. As the injuries stacked ...

Saturday Odds and Ends, What Rhymes With Sissy Edition

Nothing like a win over the Cardinals to get people off the ledge. I mean, it’s getting ridiculous. For instance: Sometime around 8 or 9 tonight, the Cubs can make the call on whether to print playoff tickets this year. That's how important Carlos Zambrano's start is against the St. Louis Cardinals. Win or lose, that's how important his shoulder is to the Cubs' chances of doing any damage in October -- and possibly of even getting there. That came out of the Sun-Times, for crying out loud. That’s actual press coverage of our team. Adding to the circus atmosphere is the return of Jim Edmonds to St. Louis, this time in Cubbie Blue. St. ...

Robothal's Improbability Drive Kicks Into High Gear With Dodger Trade Noise

Via BTF comes this gem of Robothal genuflecty silliness, a possible trade for C.C. Sabathia: The Brewers aren't the only team pushing hard for Indians left-hander C.C. Sabathia. Dodgers Interested In C.C. Sabathia And Jack Wilson
Published 7/5/2008 by kensai (noreply@blogger.com) at Fire Ned Colletti Now
Ken Rosenthal reports that the Dodgers are interested in dealing for Sabathia and Wilson. First, let's deal with the Sabathia rumor. "The Brewers aren't the only team pushing hard for Indians left-hander C.C. Sabathia. The Dodgers also are heavily in the mix, according to major-league sources. Sabathia, 6-5 with a 2.16 ERA in his past 14 starts, is scheduled to pitch twice more before the All-Star break. His next start is Tuesday, but several baseball people expect he will be traded before then. While the Dodgers might not offer a prospect ...

MLB Trade Rumors: Do The Dodgers Need An Ace Or A SS More?
Published 7/5/2008 by faketeams at FakeTeams: Front Page Posts

The Jack rumors begin anew
Published 7/5/2008 by Pat (noreply@blogger.com) at Where have you gone, Andy Van Slyke?
... , Ken Rosenthal (who's in full-on trade-season robot-mode) mentions that the Dodgers may be interested in getting someone other than the corpse of Nomar Garciaparra to play short while Furcal is out. These are pretty preliminary talks because all Rosenthal can tell us is that the Pirates are interested in the same players the Indians are asking for in early C.C. Sabathia talks. Rosental mentions James McDonald, Chin-Lung Hu, and Andy LaRoche all as potential targets for the Tribe and thus, presumable the Pirates as well. ...

The Trade Deadline Approaches

... It's July. How do I know it's July? Not the fireworks, cookouts, or red, white, and blue caps on the baseball players. No, it's because Ken Rosenthal wrote his first name-dropping trade column of the season. In one article with 646 words, Rosental manages to list the following names: ...

To CC or not to CC
Published 7/5/2008 by ToyCannon at True Blue LA: Front Page Posts
... CC may be my favorite pitcher to watch and I'm watching the rumors with plenty of interest and skepticism.  Many on-line commentators have expressed shock that the Dodgers would be interested in bringing in a pitcher like Sabbathia when it would appear that starting pitching is the least of our shortcomings at the moment.  I say to them that CC has to be of interest to any team who wants to add an ace for the playoff run. Who do you think would be favored in a short series if you had CC/Billingsley as your tandem?  Is starting pitching really a strength for us? ...

Dodgers Trade Analysis - What We Need, and What We Don’t
Published 7/5/2008 by DodgerFan at dodgerfan.net
The rumor mill has the Dodgers going after the Indians’ C.C. Sabathia and shortstop Jack Wilson from the Pirates according to Ken Rosenthal from FOX Sports. Rosenthal implies that Andy LaRoche, minor league pitcher James McDonald and shortstop Chin-Lung Hu could be some of the players potentially headed to Cleveland. Now those would be some moves. In my opinion, help at shortstop is the clear priority with Furcal likely done for the season. You can never argue with adding a #1 starter to your pitching staff, but that’s not where the Dodgers really need the help. The Dodgers are currently leading the NL with a 3.70 ERA. Clearly the pitching staff is producing, and is ...
