Building a bullpen one LaTroy at a time

... The Yankees, according to Ken Rosenthal, are close to a one-year, $3.75 million deal with LaTroy Hawkins. This move bores me. On the one hand, it’s a one-year deal for not very much money. On the other, Hawkins has seen his K/9 IP decline over the last five seasons (with a slight uptick last year), and just like every other Yankee reliever, he puts on more than a baserunner per inning. Is a 35-year-old really a bullpen upgrade? ...

Yanks, Hawkins Close
Published 12/9/2007 by Joe Pawlikowski at MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
... Ken Rosenthal reports that the Yankees are close with LaTroy Hawkins on a one-year deal worth $3.75 million. If this proves true, the Yankees will have beat out the Rockies and Rangers for Hawkins. The signing comes as rather strange, being a one-year deal for a soon-to-be 35-year-old. ...

... Fox Sports says free agent relief pitcher La Troy Hawkins is on the threshold of a one-year, $3.75 million deal with the New York Yankees, which would be his sixth club in a thirteen-year career that included a 3.42 ERA out of the Colorado Rockies’ National League pennant-winning bullpen in 2007. ...

Hawkins in pinstripes? Yikes!
Published 12/10/2007 by ETVal at Valentine's Views
As a New York Yankee fan, there is only one good thing I can say about the Yankees' decision to add LaTroy Hawkins to their bullpen. Thank God Hawkins is reportedly only getting a one-year contract ($3.75M) from the Yankees! I know the Yankees need to replace Luis Vizcaino, who has priced himself out of pinstripes by asking for a three or four-year contract. But Hawkins? This guy is mediocre at best, and that's probably being kind. He has a 4.68 ERA in a middling 13-year career. He went 2-5 with a 3.42 ERA for Colorado last season. ...
LaTroy Hawkins Still Plays Baseball

The New York Yankees have reached a preliminary agreement on a one-year, $3.75 million deal with old school reliever LaTroy Hawkins. The soon-to-be 35-year-old righty went 2-5 with a 3.42 ERA last season for the Colorado Rockies, making $3.25 million before the club declined their $3.75 million option to hurl him into free agency with a $250,000 buyout instead. Though the Yanks transformed minor league-starter Joba Chamberlain into a setup man for the last couple months of the season, they plan to ...
So Far, So Good For the Yanks
Published 12/10/2007 by Brian at Depressed Fan
... LaTroy Hawkins - Rumored to be on the verge of signing for 1 year/$3.75M. A great move, in my opinion. Not exactly cheap, but a one-year deal is very little risk and a veteran arm was desperately needed in the pen. I'd bet he out-performs Vizcaino's 2007. ...

... Yankees close to inking reliever Hawkins (FOXSports.com) When we think “improving the bullpen,” the name LaTroy Hawkins doesn’t immediately jump to the forefront. But it did for the New York Yankees, who appear ready to sign the free-agent right-hander to a one-year contract worth an estimated $3.75 million. ...
LaTroy Hawkins gives Farnsworth company
Published 4/5/2008 by Ed Valentine at Bugs & Cranks
... exit, so Farnsworthless now has competition for most vilified Yankee reliever.
It’s way too early to label Hawkins and his 31.50 ERA a bust, but it’s not like you couldn’t have predicted that Hawkins wouldn’t exactly be a shut down reliever when the Yankees signed him over the winter. In a post headlined ‘Hawkins in Pinstripes? Yikes!’ this is what I said when the Yankees acquired him.
Thank God Hawkins is reportedly only getting a one-year contract ($3.75M)!
