Neyer: Top 50 for 5
Published 3/25/2008 by Aaron Lerner at Hot Foot
In his latest article for ESPN.com, the always incomparable Rob Neyer compiles his list of the top 50 major leaguers over the next 5 years. And who, you may ask, is at the top of that list? Number 5 in your programs, number 1 in your hearts, our very own David Wright.
Neyer states:
Great hitter, good fielder, fine baserunner … and last year, at 24, he was the best player in the National League.
Also appearing on the list: Newly acquired Johan Santana coming in at number 5. Jose Reyes, fittingly, at number 7 and Carlos Beltran at number 26. ...
Neyer's Top 50 for Five Years
Published 3/25/2008 by Shyster at ShysterBall
ESPN runs some rare, non-Insider Neyer. It's like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free: This winter, I made lists of the top players at each position over the next five seasons (2008 to 2012). Mistakes were made, readers were horrified and corrections were issued. With that experience to guide me, I've now combined all those lists for one uberlist: the top 50 major leaguers for the next five years. Drink up while it's cold, ladies.

NEYER’S TOP 50
Published 3/25/2008 by The Zoner at Zoner Sports
Rob Neyer of ESPN ranks his top 50 players over the next 5 years. And there is only one White Sox, Nick Swisher at #29. There isn’t a Cub on the list.
Check out the list here.
The next 5 years
Published 3/25/2008 by Tangotiger (tangotiger@yahoo.com) at THE BOOK--Playing The Percentages In Baseball
This is Rob Neyer‘s list. Does it make sense? Has be balanced current talent level and aging? While I have big problems with Win Shares, we can make some use of my 5-yr Win Shares aging curves. The players we are interested in will follow the “20+ WS” pattern, so focus on that column. A guy who is 22 will generate double the wins as a guy at age 34, and 50% more a guy at age 30. How does Neyer do?
Let’s take ARod. He averaged 34 win shares over the last 3 years. Therefore, his 5-yr looking forward Win Shares for a guy who is 32, would be around an average of 54% of that per ...
Lists! Neyer's 50 Best Disses Howard
Published 3/25/2008 by Enrico at The700Level.com - Philly Sports & Minutiae
Lists are obviously a subjective thing but they're also good conversation starters. ESPN's Rob Neyer ranks his 50 best MLB players in terms of the next 5 years. Chase Utley is the highest Phillie at number 8 and Young James comes in at 16th. Perhaps the biggest surprise was his valuation of Ryan Howard who came in at 45th. He's obviously a devastating hitter, but he has virtually no value when
he's not in the batter's box and may average more than 200 strikeouts
per season over the next five years. And at 28, he may already have
played his best. And Cole Hamels? Nowhere to be found. Right. ...
Where's Prince?

Not to be a homer, but how is Prince only 40th on this list? The Top 50 For The Next 5 Years. I don't care if he brings nothing to the table defensively. You're telling me there are 39 guys that GMs would rather have for the next 5 years instead of Prince? No way, no chance.
Rob Neyer Makes His Deadline

Rob Neyer went with the easy column today, naming the top 50 players over the next five years. Two Dodgers appear on the list, Martin at 33, and Matt Kemp at 49. Personally, I have to question the validity of the list when Kemp is stuck between Justin Morneau (three years older and has one good season out of four to his credit) and Asdrubal Cabrera (really, Asdrubal Cabrera?) Also, Neyer could be one of the few people outside of New York that would take Melky Cabrera over Kemp. He justifies Kemp's place on the list by saying "why couldn't he get constant playtime last year?" but dysfunctional management seems to be the person to blame for that. I actually made a ...

Trades you later regret Rob Neyer on ESPN has a list of the top 50 players for the next five years- link I know, I know. Who reads ESPN, much less Neyer? But hey, it's a slow news day. At #50 on the list is none other than: Asdrubal Cabrera (22) "Cabrera might be a stretch here, as much of his value is wasted at second base (by most accounts he's a fine shortstop). But at 22, he's already good enough with the bat to play second base, and a shift to shortstop would just be gravy." Do you think the Mariners regret this trade? Do you think they would trade Jose Lopez straight up for Cabrera? Which one would you ...

Good news: I just ordered an iPhone. After years of suffering with Verizon's awful phone selection I finally decided to jump ship. I'm still using the Motorola Q that I bought a couple of years ago, and am bewildered that Verizon hasn't come up with anything better in the interim. The other smartphones they have released are all too thick; the Q is less than ...

2008 has started, and much as 2007 ended, with the Red Sox winning - albeit only just, taking ten innings to defeat the Oakland A's. It's good to have "proper" baseball back again, though I am using the quotes advisedly, since the first game of the season took place in Japan. I'm all in favor of broadening the international appeal of the game, but I am not sure that this is the way to do it. I certainly know that I had little or no interest in getting up in the middle of the night to watch the event. Opening Day? It's vastly over-rated: the Diamondbacks will get to see it in three different stadiums this year, playing the home opener in Cincinnati and Colorado, as ...

Flotsam and Jetsam

This isn't much of a Flotsam and Jetsam, but I'm in a hurry. So here we go: Two Marlins made Rob Neyer's list of The top 50 for five years. Here is an interesting article about Mike Jacobs, read quickly before it disappears. Also, 78 of the Marlins games will be broadcast in HD. Should you be fortunate enough to get to view those games in HD, don't rub it in. Some of us have to watch the Marlins on a tiny computer screen and we feel bad enough as it is. And that is it for today's Flotsam and Jetsam.
Link: ESPN Top 50 Players Over Next Five Years
Published 3/27/2008 by Dave at The Mets Report
ESPN’s Rob Neyer put together a list of his top 50 players over the next five years. David Wright is at the top of the list. While that’s a nice compliment for David, I’m not sure that I agree with that. When Miguel Cabrera is motivated, he and Alex Rodriguez are the best hitters in baseball. I was also surprised to see Ryan Howard at #45 on the list. He has to be higher than that! Anway, take a look at the full list here.

Mets' young core should Wright a happy ending -- sooner or later
Published 3/27/2008 by Eddie D'Anna at SILive: Ya Gotta Believe
With the September collapse that ended the 2007 season, and the serial injury bug that claimed a host of victims this spring, it's easy to lose sight of two things when it comes to the New York Mets: 1. They are very good. 2. They are young in the places where it matters the most. ESPN.com's Rob Neyer compiled a list this week of the top 50 players for the next five seasons and four Mets made the cut -- including three in the top 10. No other team had more than one in the top 10. ...

OPENING DAY: Games to Watch, Notes and Links
Published 3/31/2008 by Alan Hull at Baseball Mastermind
Okay, so the games in Japan were the MLB’s first opening day - gotta expand our horizons. Daisuke Matsuzaka looked nervous but also like every pitcher in the first few weeks of the season - not ready - in front of the Japanese crowd but his performance looked a lot worse than it really was. Then there was the second opening day, Sunday night, when the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals squared-off in the new Nationals Park, of the $611 million variety. Ryan Zimmerman broke the new ballpark in nicely. He’s going to have a great year. But today, is Opening Day. Baseball on all day, it’s a beautiful thing. ...
Still not the alpha Cabrera, but Melky passes Orlando, gains on Miguel
Published 5/5/2008 at Roto Arcade
Melky Cabrera is available in way too many Yahoo! leagues. Last week, he was only 64.8 percent owned. That's somewhat unusual, because A) he's No. 63 in overall fantasy rank, and B) New York players are rarely under-owned. It's not like excellence had never been predicted for Cabrera. He's only 23, so you shouldn't assume that he won't improve significantly. He's pretty good right now, in fact: 16 R, 6 HR, 17 RBI, 3 SB, .291/.359/.505. Is Cabrera going to maintain the 30/15 pace? Well, so far he's hitting a few more fly balls than he has in the past, and his HR/FB rate (17.6) is much ...
