Sullivan’s Latest Rangers Mailbag; Loe Ready For Spring Training
Published 12/18/2007 by Joey Matschulat at Baseball Time in Arlington
I’ve got nothing. T.R. Sullivan released the latest edition of his MLB.com mailbag on Monday morning, and shockingly enough, there’s only one absurd fan-engineered trade proposal included this time! What are the chances of the Rangers going after the likes of Andrew Miller, who was recently traded to Florida? What if we traded Padilla to the Marlins for Miller and Carlos Martinez or Hanley Ramirez? I really think we need to dump Padilla and this seems like a good trade. – Chris J., Norman, Okla. If general manager Jon Daniels can swing that trade, then ...

Pirates announce, "We Want a Bad Catcher"

... Another article worth pointing out: if you have a BP subscription, make sure to read Kevin Goldstein's Devil Rays prospect ranking.  As he puts it, "That, folks, is a borderline obnoxious collection of excellent young talent."  Since there are two center fielders on his list, plus B.J. Upton, you wonder if there's a match somewhere between the Rays and Brewers, maybe Fernando Perez, who should be ready by '09 and would push Bill Hall to left or back to the infield.

[THE HANGOVER] Three. Numbers. Is. Toooo. Much.
Published 1/2/2008 by The Professor at Rays Index
... A little old, but Baseball Prospectus gives us the Rays' Top 11 prospects, and the list includes five 5-star prospects. We are glad to see that some still consider Reid Brignac an elite prospect. And having seen both Wade Davis and Jake McGee pitch, we have our money on Davis being the better major leaguer. McGee's only advantage over Davis at this point is being left-handed. [Baseball Prospectus] ...

[THE HANGOVER] A Meta-Analysis Of Top Tampa Bay Rays Prospects
Published 1/10/2008 by The Professor at Rays Index
... We decided to do a meta-analysis and compare the results from several websites. In the science community, a meta-analysis is what we do when we don't want to do any work ourselves and instead want to take the work of a bunch of other people, tease the data a little, draw some conclusions that nobody had noticed before, and then pawn it off as our own. A few notes on the Meta-Analysis.. We included rankings from Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, Minor League Ball, DRays Bay, Rays Digest ...

Needs and Luxuries: Tampa Bay Rays
Published 1/21/2008 by Tim Dierkes at MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
... Hammel, Jackson, Sonnanstine, Howell, and Niemann.  While these aren't household names there's a lot of talent in that group. The pitching pipeline is stacked with five-star prospects David Price and Wade Davis plus a four-star Jacob McGee.  The "need" for '08 is to let young pitchers get their big league reps in.  The Rays don't need a veteran free agent stealing valuable innings - instead save the money and bring in a difference-maker for '09.  ...

2008 Early Draft Preview: The Top Talents
Published 1/25/2008 by Mike A. at River Ave. Blues
It’s getting to be that time of year again, the time when we can start looking at some prospects for June’s first-year player draft. It’s obvious now that the Yanks’ draft strategy in the early rounds is to take whatever top talent has fallen because of signability/injury concerns/etc., so I’ve decided to kick off this year’s draft coverage by looking at the best players available, since there’s always a chance they could fall. The draft order is basically set (there are only five free agents left unsigned that will bring back compensation), and the Rays have earned the dubious distinction of becoming ...

Future Shock: Organizational Rankings, Part 2 by Kevin Goldstein
Published 3/5/2008 at Baseball Prospectus
1. Tampa Bay Rays Last Year's Ranking : 1 Why They're Unchanged : Evan Longoria 's full-season debut went even better than expected, and they added No. 1 overall pick David Price to the system. Strengths : Yes. There are just tons of prospects everywhere, as 20 of MLB's 30 teams don't have one prospect ranked higher than Tampa's fifth-rated player. Weaknesses : It's hard to figure out what to do with all of this talent. Seriously, they're not just No. 1, they're No. 1 by a mile. Outlook for 2009 Ranking : Unchanged. Even with Longoria in the big leagues, the Rays have more than enough talent to remain at the top, and ...
