 Gagne out as closer Links7
As expected today, Eric Gagne is out of the closer's role after his comments in today's paper saying he didn't deserve the spot any longer. Gagne said it was a mental issue, and Ned Yost said Gagne would receive a break from the role, leaving the ninth inning to his entire bullpen depending on the matchups. "He probably needs a little bit of a mental break," Yost said. ... [link]

Looks like tapering off the steroids has hit Gagne harder than most.

Brewers Remove Gagne From Closer Role
Published 5/11/2008 by Eli (noreply@blogger.com) at MLB Rumors
... According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal, Gagne asked Brewers management to remove him from the closer spot. "He probably needs a little bit of a mental break," Yost said. "He's really pushing himself really hard and taking it really, really hard. We'll probably just mix and match." Gagne did call it a mental issue and it is unclear what his new role will be with team. The closing spot will most likely be by committee, with Salomon Torres and Guillermo Mota taking the majority of the opportunities. ...

Gagne out as closer

... The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that, as expected, Eric Gagne has been removed from the closers role for the Brewers. This comes after an awful start to the season for Gagne in which he has blown five saves. He’s obviously extremely frustrated, saying after a loss yesterday that he shouldn’t get the ball in the ninth anymore. ...

Pre-Closing Time: Let's just get all the Gagne/Torres/Shouse nonsense out of the way early
Published 5/11/2008 at Roto Arcade
Ned Yost finally bowed to pressure from the powerful anti-Gagne lobby, removing his $10 million closer from ninth inning duties, at least temporarily. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel had this to say on their Brewers' blog this morning: The closer role will now be filled by the entire bullpen, and Yost said it might be as many as three pitchers in the ninth inning if the opposing team's lineup dictates such moves. Salomon Torres has 29 career saves, David Riske has 20 and Guillermo Mota has 19. Yost indicated that Gagne's ...

Gagne latest closer to fall

Eric Gagne According to Anthony Witrado of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (click here for the post), Ned Yost, the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, has removed Eric Gagne as the team’s closer, saying that “he probably needs a little bit of a mental break.”  No official replacement was named. The likely candidates to replace Gagne would be David Riske, Salomon Torres and Guillermo Mota, with Torres getting the first shot in today’s game.  He lasted only 0.2 innings, however, giving up a run on 1 hit and 1 walk, before being lifted for Brian Shouse.  Shouse got the final out, ...

... the entire bullpen for now, with quite possibly as many as three pitchers handling the ninth, if need be. Those three would likely be Salomon Torres, who has 29 career saves, David Riske with 20 and Guillermo Mota with 19. On a lighter note, if you were ever wondering who the best shortstop in the history of the world is, look no further than The Grand National Championships, who are also fed up with this Eric Gagne business. Eric Gagne: The WoW True Hollywood Story
Published 5/12/2008 by Camp Tiger Claw at Walkoff Walk
Eric Gagne's fall from goggled grace hit a new low this weekend after he effectively removed himself from the closer role in the Milwaukee bullpen. Gagne called his start on Saturday an "embarassment" and said he no longer deserved the job. As of Saturday night, Gagne and Yost were the last two people in America that had yet to say that, so once that shoe dropped, the manager had no choice but to demote Gagne. In Yost's expert opinion, Gagne needs "a mental break." To which I say: FROM WHAT!? ...
