It's hard to believe this is the same Mike Mussina we saw get absolutely shelled earlier in the season. The same Mussina that the Steinbrenners had to call out to the media. Mike pitched like an all star, until he started feeling a little light headed, which is why Girardi went to the bullpen as soon as he did. Well, Mike Mussina certainly did his job today, throwing six scoreless innings against the Red Sox. The hardest part of his day? Watching Mariano Rivera get through a brutal ninth. Still, Rivera got the job done after giving up a run and loading the bases with no outs, helping Mussina pick up his 11th win of the year. Is it enough to get Mussina on the All-Star team? We’ll find out ...Sox Can’t Come Back in 9th; Yankees Win 2-1

Today’s game was a classic pitchers’ duel that saw Red Sox pitcher Justin Masterson at the wrong end. Despite giving up only two runs, Masterson pitched another good game, but Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina pitched a better one. Masterson pitched 6 innings giving up 2 runs on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks. Mussina also pitched 6 innings with no runs, 5 strikeouts, and only 1 ...Manny Gets HBP Three Times

Manny Ramirez hits Mike Mussina pretty well -- 28-for-100 , with nine HRs and a .630 slugging percentage. Since the start of the 2005 season, Manny has battered the Moose to the tune of 13-for-26 (.500). But it's doubtful Mussina had any thoughts of retaliation on his mind when he hit Manny with a pitch in the first inning this afternoon, then hit him again when he led off the fourth. Last time out, Mike Mussina struck out eight and allowed two earned runs over six innings and lost 2-1. This afternoon, Mussina struck out five over six shutout innings, as the Yankees won 2-1. This was his 11th win of the season and he did it in front of Terry Francona , who will be picking the American League All-Star pitching staff. When I woke up this morning, I did not have a cardiologist. I think I need one now. Having lost two straight and four of five, the Yankees needed a win tonight in the worst way. One win can't make or break an entire season but yet, today, that's what it felt like. Mike Mussina certainly pitched like it was the case, allowing just four hits over six innings and picking up his eleventh win. He ...Yankees-Red Sox, Round Three

With the Yankees in desparate need of a victory to give them the chance at a split tomorrow, Mike Mussina has tossed a gem and the offense has gotten on the board. I really find it humorous that Red Sox fans (and Yankees fans for that matter) are so quick to write Mussina off for the season. Many feel this is all a fluke, and while Mussina's ERA will almost certainly be over 4.00 and not ...Boston at Yankees day 3

If familiarity breeds contempt, there should be animosity aplenty on Saturday when the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees meet at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox will pin their hopes on the pitching of righthander Justin Masterson in this game. Masterson has a 4-2 record and a 3.75 ERA this season. The Yankees were somehow able to score three runs against Josh Beckett in the first inning. It's a shame that Darrell Rasner hasn't been able to make it stand up. Through three innings, he has walked two and has given up five hits and three earned runs. When the Yankees finally are able to score runs, they can't make them stand up. A decent outting by Mike Mussina was wasted by the Yankee bats last night. Moose threw 6 innings giving up only two runs and the rest of the bullpen, including recently roughed up Veras, Ramirez and Giese, all threw scoreless innings. The Yankees only put together 4 hits on the night. Brett Gardner went 0 for 3 and wasn't exactly smashing in his debut. Apparently, no one told the Texas Rangers or the New York Yankees that they were supposed to hit tonight. Two line ups--one with this year's best offense, and one with last year's best offense (nearly all returning this year, too)--could not manage more than three combined runs in tonight's game. Yankees face the Texas Rangers Mike Mussina has been a surprise this year. I didn’t think he had it in him to be a quality pitcher but the more I think about it, Mussina can thank Congress for their investigation of baseball which I’m sure scared a lot of hitters to stop taking steroids.
