We give him a seven on the artistic score, but an ugly five on technical merit. That tackle was way too high, go for the legs man! Pretty self explanatory stuff here, but yet so bafflingly weird. For reasons unknown, an official in last night's incredibly tense and tight game between South ...

HIT OF THE WEEK: REF ON SOUTH CAROLINA QB STEPHEN GARCIA
NBC Sports - College Football Talk —
In a bizarre incident during LSU’s win over South Carolina, Gamecocks quarterback Stephen Garcia got drilled not by a Tigers defender, but by one of the game officials. The umpire, Wilbur Hackett Jr., collided with Garcia at the 5-yard line, slowing Garcia down long enough for LSU safety Curtis Taylor to tackle him, possibly preventing a touchdown. Some observers have wondered whether Hackett was trying to hit Garcia , but I think it was just a very unfortunate accident. Here’s the hit:

... him. At the most, let’s give him an assisted tackle, and that’s with a generous stat crew. That ref has good footwork, matching Garcia’s jukes and fakes and putting himself in a position to bring him down. But, likely having played too much Madden and becoming enamored with the truck stick, he tried for a highlight-reel forearm tackle. You’ve got to wrap up the legs there! Despite the clear lack of fundamentals, some USC fans are hoping their scouts had their eyes open on that play: ( via the FANHOUSE ) The ref is a 3 star. 6′1″ 210 lbs. A little slow but he has us in his top ...

... 6. And, of course, the collegiate umpire who knocked down a ball-carrier. The on-field officials, in addition to trying to see everything around them and not miss a blatant penalty, also have the bonus pressure on them of trying to avoid contact with every player on the field. The official on this play was in proper position and likely just tried to protect himself when the ballcarrier approached him. Yes, it looked bad. It looked real bad. I know that, and I'm sure he does, too. I'm just saying, that sometimes you get caught in very bad positions and it's human to ...
