Pirates Trade Eric Hinske to Yankees, Could Trade Nyjer Morgan
Bucs Dugout —
... The Pirates have traded Eric Hinske and cash to the Yankees for minor league pitcher Casey Erickson and minor league outfielder/catcher Eric Fryer. Garrett Jones will replace Hinske on the 25-man roster.
Erickson was mostly used as a starter last year and he pitched well, but he was too old for his level. He struggled in a few starts this year but took off upon being sent to Class A+ Tampa's bullpen, where he's struck out a batter per inning and posted a 1.10 ERA.

... in this one, and you could see from the beginning that the offense just wasn't going to hit. Mike Hampton allowed only three hits despite struggling with his command early and, you know, not being very good.
It was also clear from this game that the outfield has slowed down a lot in the past couple weeks. Delwyn Young took what seemed to be an eternity to get to a double hit to the left field corner--or maybe we've just been spoiled by Nyjer Morgan. The Crawfish Boxes —
... When I saw the lineup that the Pirates sent out on Monday, I was surprised to see many names I wasn't all that familiar with. Delwyn Young hitting third? Steve Pearce and Garrett Jones starting? This was no major league caliber lineup that Mike Hampton faced that night, and he responded by pitching quite well. The Pirates have basically waved the white flag on 2009. They have a fairly young roster though, who will be under their control for years to come. It's sort of the anti-Astros way of operating, but they ...

Pirates Improbably Beat Dodgers on Lastings Milledge's Walk-Off Hit
Bucs Dugout —
... just leave Hanrahan in. Anyway, Capps gave up three runs, leaving behind a 5-2 deficit.
Delwyn Young began the bottom of the inning with a single off the Dodgers' excellent closer Jonathan Broxton, though, and Brandon Moss and Andy LaRoche followed that with singles of their own. LaRoche's brought in Young and left the Bucs with men at second and third following an error by Rafael Furcal. The Dodgers intentionally walked Garrett Jones for the third time in the game--it was a weird game--and ...

Andy Laroche then hit an infield single which Furcal threw away, allowing a run to score and the runners to move to second and third. Broxton intentionally walked Garrett Jones, bringing up ...

Fantasy Baseball: 2009 Breakout Hitters-NL Central
FakeTeams —
... -Garrett Jones-it took Jones 11 minor league season to make it to the majors, but like Casey McGehee, he will make the NL ROY voting very interesting this season. In the minors, Jones displayed pretty good power, but his career .312 OBP and .450 SLG lead many to believe that 2009 is an aberration, and he won't duplicate his 2009 production in 2010 and beyond. But Jones numbers are quite impressive. In 296 ABs, he has gone 21-44-10-.301-.375-.588-.963. Over a full season, that works out to 40+HRs and 20 SBs. ...

Cueto goes to 11! Reds win, 8-4.
Red Reporter —
... Know what? I haven't really missed Edwin since we traded him.
McDonald led off the fourth inning with a single, and went to third on Ramon Hernandez's single. Then he scored on a passed ball. After Cueto and Stubbs made outs, Paul Janish walked, and he and Hernandez scored on Joey Votto's double. Votto was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple.
Cueto ran into trouble in the sixth inning. He gave up a leadoff single to Garrett Jones, and a walk to Brandon Moss one out later. Then ...

... and Garrett Jones. Maybe the increased volume in high definition broadcasts. Maybe the fireworks and bobblehead crowds that propelled attendance to almost break-even against 2008 were starting to tune in on TV. Or those of us that actually watch baseball stayed away from the park and watched at home (I personally only made it to the home opener this year but every evening we were home I had the Buccos on). Maybe it was passersby rubbernecking at the trainwreck. Maybe there was nothing to watch all summer. Maybe all the lifelong Penguins fans that ...

... 2.93 ERA over 166 innings. Doing it all for a team that was on its way to winning the division makes that much more special.
3. Tommy Hanson - Atlanta Braves
Hanson went 11-4 with a 2.89 ERA in 21 big league starts. Despite the fact that he pitched nearly 40 fewer innings than Happ, he only had 3 fewer strikeouts and fell just short of leading NL rookies in wins and ERA+. What's scary is that he's only 22.

... decent season, at least by their standards, until Neal Huntington traded away virtually every established player he controlled that had value. Most observers that I respect think he did exactly what he should have, but it also destroyed anything positive that could have happened for the Pirates in '09. That's not completely fair--McCutcheon should win the rookie of the year (in my opinion, anyway), and he had a fabulous first season following McLouth's departure. And Garrett Jones had an improbable year at the plate. But, as a team, ...

Twins Non-Tender Candidates
Twinkie Town —
... Justin had a fine season in Rochester, and while he's getting on a bit in age it's interesting that both Randy Ruiz and Garrett Jones (players of a similar makeup) went on to have career years with the Blue Jays and Pirates respectively. Huber is capable of that kind of production if we're looking at his minor league numbers. But it's unlikely a player of his limited defensive skills would be able to find regular playing time with the Twins, and no doubt a guy like Erik Lis is due a ...

Arizona Fall League: Jose Tabata Goes 6-for-7, Posey Drives in 4
FakeTeams —
... on Thursday. Highlighting the day was the Pirates outfield prospect Jose Tabata going 6 for 7 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBI. Quite a day for a prospect I just traded for in the UBA league. I am just curious if he will make it to Pittsburgh in 2010.
Here is what ESPN's Keith Law had to say when I asked this question in a recent chat:
rayg (burlington, nj)
Will Tabata take over RF in Pitt over Garrett Jones in 2010?
