Just what the 2008 Rule 5 Draft will produce remains to be seen. But by every indication, it looks like it will be a lot closer to the 2007 talent pool than the '06 class.

Today’s Rule 5 Draft
Nationals Farm Authority —
The 2008 Winter Meetings wrap up in Las Vegas at 11:30AM with the Rule 5 draft. The Rule 5 draft allows opportunities to players who were not placed on their team’s 40-man roster with other teams (more details here ). The Nats hold the first pick in today’s draft and seem likely to make at least one selection (they can make two if they want). This year’s draft has not received the buzz as some of the past years. I had a posting on who I was interested in last week . The names I highlighted were: Jonathan Mayo at MiLB.com has his preview up where he highlights some names to watch: Adding to the information is Baseball America, who along with a complete list of Rule 5 ...

Patrick Saunders and Troy Renck add that Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez is going to get some work in the DR starting this week, and that the team may be interested in adding reliever Luis Ayala to that bullpen scrum.
John Manuel at Baseball America backs up the word that Ringolsby gave early in the week that Corey Wimberly's getting some buzz as a Rule 5 candidate. Jonathan Mayo proposes Everth Cabrera, which I'd probably take personally, as Cabrera's one of my favorite prospects ...
Note: Rule V Draft it 12 pm EDT today
MetsBlog.com —
The Rule V Draft will occur today at 12 pm EDT, in what is typically the final event of the Winter Meetings.
According to Jonathan Mayo, at MiLB.com, writing about the Rule V Draft, “The buzz at the Bellagio has been that there isn’t much to buzz about. There seems to be a smaller pool of talent, largely because of the change in rules allowing teams an extra year than in the past before having to protect a player on the 40-man roster.”
Mayo lists eight relief pitchers who could be selected in the draft, including Cubs LHP Donnie Veal and Pirates LHP Kyle Bloom.

He has, however, targeted Randy Johnson, who does not appear to have any interest in coming to Milwaukee.
Differences in taxes and incentives might have made the Brewers' offer closer to the Yankees' offer for Sabathia.
In the end, though, Sabathia was lured to New York by the possibility of getting to eat Yankee Stadium.

River Avenue Blues —
I’m camped out in the Rule 5 Draft war room, and I have to say there’s way more people here than I would have thought. I’m not going to take a picture of the room because there’s not much to see; lots of chairs, a podium on the stage and two big projection screens with a simple yet fancy R5D logo. I’d estimate that there’s room for about 500 people in here.
The big event starts at noon eastern, and I’ll be live blogging the whole schabang. Until then, you can check out some previews from Chad Jennings, Jonathan Mayo, and John Manuel. I know it’s the same software, but it’s not a chat, it’s a liveblog. I expect this ...
