NBA Draft 2009 Aftermath: Now Who Ends Up In The D-League?
Ridiculous Upside —
... Europe, and looks like he may end up in the D-League after all.
11. Terrance Williams - New Jersey Nets - 10%
Williams is considered somewhat of a finished product by comparison to Jennings and DeRozen. So, while he may have an opportunity to play a little in the D-league, the Nets would probably rather keep all their young pieces together to develop as a team.
12. Gerald Henderson - Charlotte Bobcats - 10% ...

... guard for the Wolves with the 28th pick. That being said, the Wolves did have the 6th pick in the draft and they had a crack at every non-Harden and non-Evans shooting guard/small forward in the draft. Did they use their selections wisely? Could any pick have provided better value for the shooting guard position at #6?
In our next post we'll take a look at Ellington's competition: Stephen Curry, Terrence Williams, Jermaine Taylor, Chase Budinger, Gerald Henderson, Marcus Thornton, and Demar DeRozan. ...
Back of the Envelope Projection for the Bobcats' 2009-10 Season

... ? Everyone else at the end of the bench? No idea. This assumes that Augustin and Felton will switch up their playing time and that everyone will play, roughly, the same number of minutes they did last year. More or less, the real opportunities for improvement will come at the off guard slot, where Gerald Henderson can leap ahead of Bell's production, or at point guard, where DJ Augustin has the potential to up his game and be a major upgrade over the PG play the Cats got last season. ...

... I didn't love the wings on the board at pick six either, unless you count Stephen Curry in that group (and even Curry I felt was somewhat overrated). Neither Demar DeRozan nor Gerald Henderson put up strong numbers at the NCAA level, and anyone else would have been a reach. If the Minnesota front office didn't want to take a chance on DeRozan making good on his potential, I don't think you can blame them for that. ...

On the Wolves side of things, Minny will field a lineup that consists of two pairs of high school teammates: Niagara Falls' Flynn and Paul Harris and Episcopal Academy's (Philly) Wayne Ellington and Gerald Henderson. That's pretty cool.

... some horrific shots. It had to have been almost embarrassing for the coaching staff to see.
Joey Dorsey is just a beast. He had 8 points and 16 rebounds today. 15 of them on the defensive end.
James White came off the bench and scored 14 points in 18 minutes. I'm still very down on him. If Matthew was here to see James play, he'd come back and remove his James White fetish post out of shame and humiliation.

... and press Flynn in the backcourt. The Wolves have clearly been telling Flynn to push on offense in preparation for the regular season, and Washington didn't seem interested in adjusting last game. When the Hornets doubled Flynn with a big man as he brought the ball up, he got better at recognizing earlier and finding the open man. Similarly, whenever Flynn was at the key or elbow, the Hornets would send a big man over to prevent Jonny from flying to the rack. Ellington, Garrett Siler, Gerald Henderson and Rob Kurz all took advantage of being open at one ...
What About the Bobcats Excites You?
Rufus on Fire —
... Among the rest of the players, I'm most excited to see what Gerald Henderson can do. The guy always seemed like a bundle of untapped energy when he played at Duke, and in every interview I've seen him do, he comes off as a very thoughtful and perceptive guy. Neither of those observations is a great indicator that he'll succeed in the pros, but it certainly feels like a bright guy will be able to deal with the emotional and social and intellectual challenges the NBA offers. ...

... still on the board, "Managing Member of Basketball Operations" Michael Jordan broke with his penchant for drafting former Tar Heels. Forgoing the tradition that saw the Bobcats select Ray Felton, Scott May and (gulp) Brandan Wright, Charlotte selected guard Gerald Henderson out of Duke with the #13 selection. Wright's rights remained with Charlotte for mere moments, May has been traded and, as of writing time, Felton remains an unsigned restricted free agent, perhaps ending Jordan's infatuation with fellow UNC alumni, though head coach Larry Brown was also ...

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Finally, basketball season is here. Well, preseason basketball. And it's not televised in Charlotte.
No matter! It's on the radio, and we can listen for nuggets of information that might somehow affect the Bobcats' season. In order, here's what I'm searching for:
1 -- Information on Gerald Henderson. I desperately want him to be better than everyone thought.
2 -- Information on Alexis Ajinca's and Derrick Brown's development. Our backup PF is still empty, and those are the two in-house ...
Cavs Defeat Bobcats 92-87
Rufus on Fire —
...
Preseason games don't mean much in the macro sense. Going 0-9 last year wasn't a good sign, but it wasn't particularly bad, either. Thus, hanging with the Cavs' scrubs and losing only 92-87 isn't anything to write home about. As for the keys I stated before the game:
1 - Gerald Henderson played 20 minutes and shot 3-10 from the field. Um... Uh... Be better, Gerald.
2 - Alexis Ajinca was totally fine. He didn't set the world on fire, but I'll take 9 points and 7 boards in 19 minutes from our backup PF. He had ...

... was shockingly ineffective against Derrick Rose and Kirk Hinrich. In a little more than 11 minutes, he had 0 points, 1 assist, and 2 turnovers. I suspect that's because Augustin relies on his exceptional speed to get to the rim. Both Chicago point guards are tremendous athletes, so that would negate Augustin's advantage on other PGs. What's surprising is that D.J. didn't partake in the three point barrage, considering he was a very good shooter all last year.

-- I'm scared for D.J. Augustin. He looks like he's regressed, and just about every relevant stat is down across the board in these first few games. Tonight? Lost on defense, lost on offense. The assured manner that marked his rookie season is somewhere in the ether, probably cavorting around with his three point stroke.

-- Boris Diaw is probably hurting. He didn't have his normal offensive game, and Warrick and Ilyasova were constantly pounding the Cats inside and outside, respectively. Perhaps it was just the matchups, but I'm concerned over whether or not Diaw's trying to play through a back injury that is hurting his game too much.
