... Score one for the Giants, what was Jeremy Affeldt thinking? MLB.com is reporting that the Giants signed the free agent to a 2 year deal worth $8 million. Damaso Marte just got a 3 year deal from the Yankees for $12 million. Affeldt is a 29 year old lefty with a 3-1 strikeout to walk ratio and a 3.33 ERA (Marte's was about 4.00 last year). I just don't understand what made him jump for a deal so early in the market. He wass easily one of the strongest setup men on the market, besides being a lefty. Good move for the teams, bad move for the players. ...

The left-hander isn't really a matchup guy, and that's a good thing; he's been a versatile and durable reliever, making 74 and 75 appearances, respectively, since moving to the bullpen on a full-time basis in 2007. Last season with the Reds he was used as a multi-inning setup man, and he averaged more than a strikeout an inning. With the Rockies in 2007, he threw only 59.0 innings, which was really a misuse of his strengths. Almost every bullpen could use a guy like him, and the price looks reasonable. ...
