tykeenan I actually don't think it's that bad. The team has plenty of money now that Bonds is gone, and, while it would be nice to put all of that into the farm system/draft fund, they really can't afford to have what happened to Cain last year happen to the entire pitching staff. So there is a need for some sort of offense, although I'm not sure exactly how much Rowand will bring. I'm holding off expectations until 2009/10, and I figure by that time he'll still be quality, if overpaid. Plus, the team hasn't had a guy with his heart in years.
And they most definitely need a centerfielder. Haven't had a real one in years.

studes I don't think it's that bad, either. A slight overpayment in this market, but not a lot.

... -P- Speaking of directionless teams, the Giants signed Aaron Rowand to a five year, $60 million contract. Not that Rowand's a bad player or anything, but he's already 30 and has posted OPSes below .750 in two of the last three seasons. $60 million, while not a surprising number, is quite a lot for a guy who could very well fail to post an above-average offensive season over the entire course of the contract. ...

* Jones signed a whopping 2-year, $36 million deal with the Dodgers (I doubt, however, that Williams seriously pursued Jones).

Phillies' Best Move - Let Rowand Move On

One thing you'll find within this blog's archives relative to baseball is my absolute disgust with the upper management of my hometown Philadelphia Phillies. ... to improve the club for both now and later, and just go for the "now" part. What difference will it make to him if he's unemployed in 2009? Our best guess: Cameron won't be wearing pinstripes in 2008. For the Yanks to sign him to anything more than a two-year deal would be a questionable move, at best. And it's likely Cameron will get at least a three-year deal from some sucker team out there, given the dire need for CF help around the league, and the context of Aaron Rowand's five-year, $60 million deal . Regarding Cashman, ...

If Rowand were a few years younger, and if the contract were a few years shorter, and if the Giants were close to contending, and if the team needed a center fielder .... this would be a great move.
At least it puts the kibosh on those crazy Cain/Lincecum rumors.
