Rumors, Release and Some Baseball

... Gil Meche needed to throw innings tonight. Bottom line. The bullpen (as we mentioned) has been taxed since the All-Star Break and needed a breather. Meche really did everything that was asked of him. By the end of the seventh inning, he had thrown 100 pitches and kept the Royals in the game. He came back out for the eighth and gave up A-Rod’s 499th career jack, but try as I might, I can’t blame ...

... This is difficult to call. Vazquez is a solid starter, but like Gil Meche isn’t really number one material. And like I said, Buehrle sort of reminds me of Bannister, but with a longer track record. In terms of raw talent on both staffs, I’d give the edge to ...

... I know people have been hammering on Detroit’s starting pitching, but I don’t see it as a huge problem. Rogers aside, I’d take any one of the other four and slot them into the middle of the Royals rotation and it would make KC’s pitching much better. That’s not to say I’d take Robertson ahead of Gil Meche. I’m saying the holes in the back of the rotation mean there’s plenty of room for improvement in KC. ...
A Great Way To Start

Could Opening Day have been any better? What a game.
Some impressions:
– Gil Meche was not sharp.
6 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO
His hits seemed to come mostly off pitches he left up in the zone and his walks were the product of his inability to harness his fastball.
Looking at Pitch f/x data from last season, Meche’s fastball would move from right to left an average of 10.7 inches. On Opening Day, his average fastball moved 12.1 inches. Obviously, not all pitches are created equal - extreme movement can be a good thing if you have an ...

... poor man's version of Sonnanstine in our trade mongering, people sometimes advocating him as more realistic of a target. Jackson's always had immense talent, reaching the bigs at just 21. He, like the two above, is an exactly average groundball pitcher, but Jackson's weakness lies in his lack of control. That would be one thing if he could miss more bats than either Garza or Sonnanstine, but in fact he misses less. To put it in more familiar terms, Jackson is sort of a combination of Gil Meche circa-Seattle and ...

... Philadelphia is looking for starting pitching but they need a catcher in a bad way. And Olivo would mash in that bandbox of a ballpark. The Marlins probably wish they kept Olivo in the first place, but you always have to wonder about their ability (and desire) to add to the payroll. Even Olivo’s affordable contract might be too much for the Fish.
He’s been a surprise, but he’s still not worth much more than a “B” level prospect.

Game 1: Felix Hernandez vs Luke Hochevar Game 1: Jarrod Washburn* vs Gil Meche Game 3: Carlos Silva vs Kyle Davies
Hochevar has certainly been overshadowed by his draft class mates and for a pitcher soon to be 25 he needs to step up his performance shortly or else he might be a cautionary tale that while holding out a year might net you a better draft slot, it doesn't do much for your development. Then again, we're also talking about just one ...
