Jaffe plays GM for a day
River Avenue Blues —
GM for a day. It is of course the greatest role play another obsessed baseball fan likes to play.
Over at Baseball Prospectus, in an article not buried behind the subscriber wall Jay Jaffe played Yankee GM and tried to put together a team, within reason, that would be an improvement over the recent flawed and overpaid clubs. His results and approach are worth a look.
Jaffe begins with his basic premise:
Unfortunately, Cashman appears to have settled for Swisher as his first baseman in the hopes of saving his money for Sabathia. For that, and for his arbitration transgressions, he’s been reassigned to the ...
Who Needs Cash?
YFSF —
... Over on Baseball Prospectus, Jay Jaffe, aka the Futility Infielder, has subbed himself in for Brian Cashman and adumbrated the moves he'd make in his place as the Yanks' GM. Signing Mark Teixeira is on top of that list, and there are some other interesting ideas you may not have considered: trade Matsui to the Giants for Randy Winn, sign Nomar as a backup infielder. Like many of those to whom I generally defer on statistical matters, he thinks signing Derek Lowe is a good idea, given his consistency and durability. I'm not sanguine about that idea, and wonder about the validity ...

Jay Jaffe fixes the Yankees
New York Yankees Fan Blog —
Baseball Prospectus 's Jay Jaffe played "GM for a Day," and penned a plan to fix the Yankees for 2009 . Interestingly, Jaffe advocates withdrawing the offer to CC Sabathia and trying to upgrade the offense instead. Some highlights of Jaffe's plan: Withdraw the offer to Sabathia: "If he's not sprinting to New York, the money is better spent elsewhere." Sign Mark Teixeira: "The one thing this near-miss Yankee team needs the most is a 29-year-old switch-hitting first baseman who's not only coming off consecutive seasons of hitting at least .300/.400/.550, but is also an ...

GM for a day
This is interesting.
Signing Teixeira has it's merits. I've been against signing him, but the frank reality is, he won't play games with us. He's going where the money is, he improves our offense at 1st (and, by default, RF, where Swisher gets relocated) and our defense too.
With a front end rotation of Wang and Lowe, we'll have two dependable starters capable of throwing 400 above average innings, something we've had infrequently since 2004. Perhaps Sheets is a risk worth taking, although I think I ...
