GORDON WHITE: Ombudsman: Schreiber Keeps an Eye on ESPN 'Monolith' Links5
Avaricious television news channels spewing out information 24/7 and goaded on by their newer information dispensing cousins such as blogs, dot coms, chat rooms and other electronic rumor mongers may threaten traditional journalism standards, according to ESPN's second ombudsman, Le Anne Schreiber. This learned and well traveled reporter, editor, teacher and author who was my boss for two ... [link]

ESPN’s Ombudsman Has No Idea What She Is Talking About
Published 10/2/2007 by Tar Heel Fan at Tar Heel Fan
The Pilot down in Southern Pines snagged an inteview with ESPN Ombudsman Le Anne Schreiber covering a variety of topics concerning her work in monitoring the gigantic cesspool of hype and conflicts of interest which is the ESPN family of networks.  And in all honesty she does a pretty good job at keeping some of the folks at Bristol in line.  Unfortunately she has no clue what she is talking about when it comes to blogs: Returning to her theme of journalism s future, Schreiber told me, Since undertaking this job I have become familiar with the world of the sports blog. Ninety percent of them have no compunction about putting out any kind of rumor. Doesn t matter the source or how reliable it is. They just toss it out there because they are not journalists. They are not responsible and don t claim to be. They are just tossing out what might be of interest to the water cooler group. This is, according ...

Kendric Williams’ Season Done; Davis Reinstates Arnold

... of everyone s favorite nickname(and I don t mean that in a good way) on the UNC team, backup safety Cooter Arnold. Davis had suspended Arnold indefinitely to start the season for an unspecified violation of team rules. I could speculate as to what Arnold did to get suspended but I would not want to be one of those bloggers than perpetrate rumors causing ESPN to misreport something. At any rate I think it is safe to assume Davis wanted to at least add another body back to the secondary since having just lost a key player or he wants to return Arnold to his old position in the backfield and really confuse everyone.

A Clarification from the ESPN Ombudsman
Published 10/4/2007 by Tar Heel Fan at Tar Heel Fan
... emailed the ESPN Ombudsman Le Anne Schreiber concerning her statements that blogs were mostly responsible for the propagation of rumors and ESPN was, in a way, a victim for pushing unverified claims because the blog pushed them first.  Ms. Schreiber was kind of enough to offer a response clarifying her earlier thoughts: On 10/2/07, Le Anne Schreiber wrote: Thanks, AA. I was not misquoted, but I garbled my own thoughts by speaking too casually toward the end of a long interview with a former Times colleague. I don t in fact blame ESPN s mistakes on blogs. I do believe the internet and blogsosphere has had a large impact on how mainstream journalism is conducted. Rule of thumb in mainstream journalism used to be, you did not print rumors, period, even if they were labeled rumors, even if you were a columnist. You didn t put it out there, label it rumor, then wait to see if it was true or not. Idea of ...
