Yanks Gain Ground

Carl Pavano is apparently the toast of the town after allowing 8 base runners in 5 innings of work. I guess a 5.40 ERA is reason to celebrate this waste of oxygen. To be fair, Pavano probably would've only given up 2 runs if not for an asinine play by Damon in center. I probably shouldn't be so hard on the guy, but it's going to take a lot more than one mediocre start to make me forget the past four years. Anyway, the Yanks won, which is all that matters, 5-3. ...

... and he's posted a 6.19 ERA and 23/16 K/BB ratio in seven starts since returning from the disabled list. General manager J.P. Ricciardi indicated Saturday that the move is temporary, saying that the Blue Jays plan to "give him a couple starts down in Triple-A just to see if he can get his mechanics back together." ... Carl Pavano earned his first win in over a year, Jason Giambi drove in three and the bullpen pitched four scoreless innings as the Yanks downed the Orioles 5-3 at Camden Yards. Alex Rodriguez doubled in the first run of the game and Hideki Matsui capped off the Bomber scoring with a solo homer in the seventh to give the Bombers their second consecutive win in Baltimore. The victory also brought the Yanks to within five games of the Boston Red Sox in the wild card chase. ...

Carl Pavano did just enough in his 2008 debut and a couple of Yankee home runs helped the team defeat the Orioles by a score of 5-3. Pavano recorded his first win since April 9 of last year . Losses by both teams with "Sox" in their name helped bring the Yankees within 5 games of Boston and 4.5 games of Chicago in the wild card race. Carl Pavano wasn't fantastic in his first Major League outing of the season, but he wasn't terrible, either. He got out of a major jam in the first inning, mostly thanks to a weird-looking, unassisted double play turned by ...

... . They also got a decent pitching performance from Carl Pavano in his first start this season, who went 5 innings and gave up just 3 runs. The Yankees are showing a sense of urgency now and had Mariano Rivera close out all 3 games. They have a big series coming up with the Red Sox this week, so if they can win that series, they can certainly put themselves right back into the thick of things for the Wild Card. The one problem I see for the Yankees is that they will need to jump ahead of two teams and right now Boston, Minnesota, and Chicago are all playing well enough to stay in ...
