In my last column, I openly wondered whether Miguel Olivo would have earned the Royals a draft pick as a type B free agent had they let him move on to another team. My friend Keith Law set the record straight: Olivo would not have entitled the Royals to any compensation. This makes the decision ...

Jazayerli: Grudzielanek and gaming the arbitration rules
BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog —
Jazayerli: Grudzielanek and gaming the arbitration rules So why would the Royals offer Grudzielanek more money than he’s worth, and why would Grudzielanek decline it? I’m the last guy to believe in a conspiracy theory – I’m the guy who checks every forwarded email with Snopes.com, then embarrasses the sender by hitting “Reply all” and replying (with proof!) that the United States is not actually minting the “Amero” coin and discarding the dollar. But this time, well, call me Mel Gibson. I think – and this is only an educated guess, not predicated on any kind of insider ...

Gaming the Arbitration System
Nationals Farm Authority —
Rany Jazayerli has a great post that highlights something I have always hoped the Nationals would do in their rebuilding efforts. Game the arbitration system with Type B free agents. To put it most simply, the Royals offered SS Mark Grudzielanek arbitration right before the deadline with the knowledge he would reject it and Kansas City would be awarded a supplemental first round selection (sandwich pick) in the 2009 draft if/when he signs elsewhere. Jazayerli suggests that there might be some sort of gentleman’s agreement between Grudzielanek and the Royals wherein, ...

beyondtheboxscore.com 12/29/2008 — In this space, I have been quite critical of the Royals this offseason – from the Coco Crisp trade to the Mike Jacobs deal to the Kyle Farnsworth signing, I disagreed with the direction that the team was heading. In short, I believed that the ...
Olivo Staying in K.C.
nydailynews.com 11/3/2008 — The Royals, as expected, exercised their part of Miguel Olivo's mutual option today. Surprisingly, Olivo decided to do the same, and the sides added another mutual option for next year.
