MLB.com: Guzman agrees to two-year extension Nationals shortstop Cristian Guzman has decided to forgo free agency and agreed to terms on a two-year $16 million contract extension. Guzman will make $8 million in 2009 and ‘10. Guzman has been the Nationals’ best player this season. Entering Tuesday’s action against the Giants, Guzman is hitting .310 and leads the National League in hits (129) and at-bats (416).

Gut reaction: Bad deal*. Our sources tell us Ted Lerner threw up on Mark Lerner moments after giving the OK to open his checkbook.
We need some time to stew about this one. We've got no qualms with Guzman, heck, but we're a little leery of the money, especially if this is the move the organization will hold up for all to see in the offseason as a sign that they care about short term gains while turning a blind eye to some of the arms on the FA market/ If you believe that Guzman would've commanded much, much bigger money in free ...

According to Bill Ladson at MLB.com, fresh off a trip to the All-Star Game, Washington Nationals’ shortstop Christian Guzman has agreed to a 2-year contract extension with the team. Guzman, 30, was scheduled to become a free agent after the 2008 season, but opted to sign with the club through 2010 for $16 million ($8 million for both the ’09 and ‘10 seasons).
The deal was apparently Guzman’s way of giving back to the organization that gave him a 4-year deal after the 2004 season, and one he did not live up to. And it made sense for the Nationals as well, as they don’t have any sort of backup plan at short if Guzman had departed. Guzman had this to say ...
