walshj58 I agree with Steve. I am thoroughly mitchell'd out, but I read this piece with interest. Nice job.

John Beamer There is a lot of tht love in the air today. I'll join in. Very nice work. -
studes Whoa, you guys are scaring me. I usually get hate comments and emails when I wade into steroid territory. Thanks for the nice notes, even if they do come from the "family." -
joe arthur Agree with your views - lucid as always. One point I haven't seen made (though it probably has been made somewhere), is the defense for taking HGH: that it was rumored to speed recovery. Some players, like Pettitte, have claimed that they didn't take it as a performance enhancer per se. Management, fans and teammates all probably apply some pressure to players to recover from injury as quickly as possible, and I think we must allow that some players put the same pressure on themselves because of the large salaries they earn. Because of that, I think that perhaps we should be distinguishing consumption of steroids from consumption of HGH, and judging those who only took HGH less harshly, particularly since apparently there is no firm evidence that HGH enhances performance.

... $7 million. Jenkins is 33, can't hit lefties, and hasn't OPS-ed .800 since 2005. The plan for Jenkins may be to split time with Jayson Werth in right field, though that's a lot to pay for 300 some-odd at-bats of .262/.326/.482 production (Jenkins's batting line against righties last year). Carlos Silva to the Mariners is a done deal. Looks like 4/$44 or something thereabouts. Newsday's Ken Davidoff shares his Hall of Fame ballot. Studes has his own thoughts on the hall at the Hardball Times. The Mets may be in the ...

... Studes checks in with his. Here’s mine: instead of a “yes” ballot, why not have a “yes” ballot (max 10 names) and a “ask me next year” ballot (min 1 name; any non-returned ballot puts everyone you didn’t vote in the ask-me ballot). Imagine you are on the fence for, say, Jim Rice. You think he has a compelling case, but, you haven’t researched it enough: you’ll look at it next year. But, the ONLY way to look at it next year is if 5% of your peers have agreed that he’s a ...

Bravo, Dave. You've identified and lucidly, perceptively addressed every salient issue in this mess.
If only everyone took as sane and sensible an approach to the topic.
Very well done.
