(Pedro) Martinez could be back next week
Published 5/20/2008 at BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog
... unfold in Atlanta this week is quite similar to the one that played out late last summer prior to Martinez’s 2007 debut. Martinez threw a 64-pitch bullpen session in Turner Field on Sept. 1, and when it was complete, the Mets said that his next appearance would be either a start in Class A or a start in Cincinnati. Martinez returned from his 2006 rotator cuff surgery two days later and emerged as the winning pitcher in the Mets’ 10-4 victory against the Reds. And then this happens... ... Good to see Petey is on his way back as I am an unabashed Petey fan back from his Red Sox days. I know there is a portion of the fan base that thinks waiting on Petey is much ado about a future injury and I have no argument for that, however, there is a more positive vibe with this team when Petey is around so just having him patrol the clubhouse is a plus. Hopefully there is still a hint of vintage Petey left for this season. Prays and thoughts go to Petey’s dad who is battling brain cancer and it’s that illness that could drive him to retirement which is very sad. ...

... The Mets have won more games than we have this year, but their Pythagorean record is worse, Pedro Martinez is talking retirement, Carlos Delgado and Luis Castillo are probably done, and their pitching rotation drops off considerably after Johan Santana and the overachieving John Maine. (Funnily enough, Mike Pelfrey is pitching better than Oliver Perez.) And, after pitching 173 innings of relief the past 2 years, Aaron Heilman’s arm appears to have finally fallen off. ...

Pedro Martinez may retire at the end of season and not for the reason you may think
Published 5/20/2008 by houroc at SportFiends
So Pedro Martinez is not talking about about early retirement, maybe even as soon as the end of the season. No it is not because he is hurt all the time or because he washed up, even though I’m sure those factors contributed. He is actually considering retirement so that he can be with his family during a tough time. His father has brain cancer and is very sick and wants Pedro to be there for his family. “It’s taking a toll on me and my family, my dad’s situation,” Martinez said, ...

... and I'm going to decide." Martinez, recovering from a hamstring injury, will meet the team in Atlanta today to throw in the bullpen, and may make a start on Monday at Shea against the Marlins. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is only 12-9 since 2005, and has appeared in only one game for the Mets this year. But even though he has rarely been around recently, I've always enjoyed the idea of Pedro Martinez as a Met, and it would be a shame to see him go. ... get this far. I mean really. Who cares about the Commish? He cannot do anything and your farm is pretty barren. After Omar made overtures this past off-season about abandoning slot, I would be very disappointed if they passed up a better player so they do not piss anyone off. If they pass up Hosmer? Utterly ridiculous and why this team will never get over that next hump. You simply cannot pass up a gift like that and they better step it up on all fronts. Would Pedro retire to be with his parents? Would Omar give him a Clemens-esque deal to keep him ...
