Henderson saves Duke from Belmont upset - Men's College Basketball
WASHINGTON -- Waiting for the inbounds play, Kyle Singler put his hand on Matthew Dotson 's chest, trying to spot the Belmont player for defensive purposes. Without even looking down, Dotson brushed it away. It was a meaningless encounter, something that happens countless times in virtually every basketball game at every level. Occurring when it did and where it did, with second-seeded Duke ... [link]

Why I Picked Duke
Published 3/21/2008 by Vegas Watch at Vegas Watch
"Mystique and Aura? Those are dancers at a nightclub." -Curt Schilling, 2001 Schilling obviously talks too much, but the above is one of my favorite quotes from an athlete. The Yankees didn't win games 4 and 5 because they have 26 world championships- they won them because Byung-Hyun Kim made bad pitches to Tino Martinez and Scott Brosius, and ...

Friday Extras: WIP's Political Madness, Temple's March Sadness
Published 3/21/2008 by Matt P at The700Level.com - Philly Sports & Minutiae
It's a tough morning for Temple fans, who yesterday saw Fran Dunphy's squad get dismantled by Michigan State. Nothing was falling for the Owls, who looked a little lost under the national spotlight, and MSU's defense was stifling. In any case, it was a milestone for Dunphy to even get them there this year, and there's plenty to be excited about in this team's future. As soon as the hang over wears off, that is... We hit up Campbell's Boat House in Media, which was a full-on Temple bar, with plenty of Dunphy's in attendance. Great times, despite the loss. What else is going on? For starters: •610 WIP is being mentioned on everything from the Huffington Post to CNN ...

To Love or To Hate - Which Is More Satisfying?
Published 3/21/2008 by World's Tallest Jockey at The Legend of Cecilio Guante
Which image gives you more joy? or... I think I know my answer. Watching the dook Blue Devils narrowly escape Belmont last night reminded me once again of a question that I frequently come back to: Do I love Carolina as much as I hate dook? Obviously my hatred of dook started with my love for Carolina, but at some point did my spite for the evil side actually surpass my affection for the good and pure? I think it did. Now...how far has it gone? After much deliberation I decided that I would ...

Pre-Preseason College Hoops Top 10
Published 6/23/2008 by Vegas Watch (noreply@blogger.com) at Vegas Watch
There is a lot of information to go through here, so I thought I'd try to compile some of it, as well as add my own opinions. Among the various resources used for this were Katz's top 25, Lunardi's Bracketology, Pomeroy's site, Rivals' Prospect Rankings, and Wikipedia (always). The futures lines were gathered from Bodog, BetUS, Carib, and Sportsbook. 1. North Carolina (4.5-1, BetUS) Katz #1, Lunardi #1 seed Last year: 36-3 (14-2), Pomeroy #4. Lost to Kansas in the national semifinal. Sophomore forward Alex Stepheson is transferring, to some school out west (he ...

NCAA Pants Party: Duke Vs. Belmont [NCAA Tournament Previews]

Duke Blue Devils (27-5) vs. Belmont Bruins (25-8) When: Thursday Where: Washington, D.C. DUKE BLUE DEVILS 1. It's Pronounced "SHY-er fah-SAY." Photos of it are center (and roommate) Brian Zoubek's desktop background. "Weird," says guard Gerald Henderson. "It's just weird." They're referring, of course, to the infamous (Jon) Scheyer Face, found on the mug of Duke's sixth man. Judging ...

So Close Duke, So Close......Belmont had you!

Hating Duke is one of the least original stances in all of sports fandom. Probably because it's one of the most satisfying. Maybe if Dick Vitale, Billy Packer, and Jay Bilas died in a fiery car wreck and half of the Duke student body succumbed to a deadly outbreak of an ebola-avian bird flu hybrid, the schadenfreude would be satisfying enough to hate the basketball team a little less

The Tournament Has Seriously Been Lacking Magic

Belmont: Sort of Exciting
Two Washington Times sportswriters playing with popcorn. Bad sign when that's my best photo thus far. I'm not just trying to be needless difficult here, but I was courtside for almost all of the second half of Belmont's near-miss against Duke. It was fairly electric--with West Virginia fans waving Belmont shirts in the air and Arizona fans chanting "Let's Go Belmont" and Belmont fans with ...
Belmont University Almost, Almost Provides Tournament's Biggest Upset Ever Against Duke
I don't know about you, but I'm still not over that final minute of the Duke-Belmont game last night. I can only imagine how the Bruins slept last night. The upset would have been awesome, nearly making all of ours sports years, but the fact that for 40 minutes tiny Belmont University was able to hang with one of the winningest programs in the history of college basketball makes ...
Neary Madness in March: Duke Survives
No. 15 Belmont 70 No. 2 Duke 71 This certainly qualified as madness. Should there be an asterisk because Coach K was ill? Gerald Henderson went coast-to-coast for a layup with 11 seconds left, and then Belmont’s gusty guard, Justin Hare threw up an airball, but the Bruins got it back on jump ball. Then Belmont foolishly threw away the inbounds pass, much to the chagrin of 95 ...
Besides Belmont, A Pretty Boring Day Of Brackets
The 2008 NCAA Tourney opening round is starting to look familiar to the 2007 Tourney - no big upsets, but plenty of blowouts . The closest excitement fans were treated to on Thursday was Belmont’s close call against Duke. The 15th-seed Bruins had the 2nd-seed Blue Devils on the ropes, but a bad inbounds pass and a missed last-second half-court shot allowed the Dookies to escape ...
