Both Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman were quick to say yesterday that Eric Hinske can play first base, third base, right field and left field.
They are correct in the sense that he has played those positions in the past. But as far as third base goes, he should not.
Hinske has played 68 ...

Hinske to see time at 3B
The Yankee Universe —
... noted that Hinske could play 3B while Duncan could not—so, for those wondering why Shelley didn’t get the nod, now you know. It’s all about 3B and A-Rod. Ultimately, Hinske looks to be A-Rod’s regular backup with Cody Ransom, who is hitting .200 and is not a good defender, slowly fading out of the 3B picture (he’ll likely fill-in at SS and 2B).
Already, though, there is some question as to how good Hinske can be at 3B.

Posada is 5th tonight but probably only because of Washburn, a lefty. Hopefully Girardi keeps Jorge 5th and notes what’s going on.
Yesterday I wondered about Hinske filling in at 3rd to give A-Rod a day off. Thought it might not be a bad option (power-wise) but did wonder about Hinske not playing much 3B since 2004.
Pete Abraham has more on that. Uh oh. There could be trouble here.

... Many in the blogosphere have pointed out the Hinske has played just 132 innings at third over the past five seasons, and has not been particularly graceful at the hot corner. Still, I'd expect to see him see time there soon, particularly when the Yanks get to the turf in Minnesota next week. All he has to do is run into one at the plate to make up for a few errors. ...

Here's the deal, the Yanks send two low-level, anonymous prospects to the Pirates for a guy who was AL rookie of the year in 2002 (Now, I remember) and is making $1.4 million in 2009.
