Computers vs. Scouts, Updated

Erich Doerr and John Hollinger have each published new analyses, looking at the 2008 draft from a purely statistical standpoint.  Doerr’s piece at DraftExpress nicely summarizes some of his previous work, for a new audience.  He’s extremely cautious. The article is not, strictly speaking, a ranking system. Doerr uses his ratings to give essentially a thumbs up/thumbs down (or at least a caution) for each of the high-profile players.  Of note: Don’t get too excited about any of the guards… don’t sleep on Mareese Speights.  Hollinger, unlike Doerr, thinks he has it nailed.  He’s also totally revamped his method since last year. He’s now done – he says – a regression analysis, rather than an ...

... , and it's hard to know what to believe (if any of it). One thing I will say when it comes to the draft - in my opinion it's a heck of a lot smarter to listen to the statheads than the general news media covering the prospects' potential. Hollinger has updated his system (I'm not sure I like it as much) and released his rankings of this year's big men. Wages of Wins has some ...

Draft Week Hysteria

Well, we're in the home stretch. The draft is looming, Ed Stefanski has changed his tune, sort of. The pundits are spewing rumors left and right. Let's try to catch up a little bit as we head into this fateful week. First, the dates: The NBA Draft will take place Thursday, June 26th at 8pm. Teams will be able to begin negotiating with free agents on July 1st. That's also the deadline for most opt-outs, including Elton Brand. Now some links: If you haven't already done so, make sure you get your draft bracket in to Arin over at Arin It Out. He's running a contest, whoever predicts the first round the best wins some cash. The deadline is ...

2008 NBA Draft Odds

Sportsbook and BetUS have minimal, boring odds up on Thursday's draft. Luckily, Bodog comes through with an extensive selection. While I am trying to determine what is and isn't a good bet, please be advised that my knowledge of the situation comes from reading this Chad Ford column, and looking at DraftExpress and NBADraft.net. It should be noted that Ford, while having the most accurate mock last year, only called 12/30 picks correctly. This stuff is really hard to call, especially when you get past the first few picks. Unless otherwise specified, these props are regarding who will be taken in each slot, ...
