News and Notes–Dec. 21
Raise the Jolly Roger —
... There’s some nice coverage of where various Pirates prospects will start the season in the [Post-Gazette] today. Highlights: Pedro Alvarez will head directly to Single-A, either West Virginia or Lynchburg (rare but not unprecedented for a rookie). Brad Lincoln and Dan Moskos may start out in AA Altoona despite struggling last year in Lynchburg. Same with Steve Lerud and Jeff Sues, who were both added to the 40-man this offseason. Also, Jose Tabata could potentially begin in AAA, which would be jump for him. The only problem is he and Andrew McCutchen are both CF’s. ...

Bucs Dugout —
There isn't a lot of news today, so again, I'm just catching up on stuff I missed. The Pirates will likely send Pedro Alvarez to Class A+ Lynchburg to begin the season. He'd skip three levels, which might sound intense, but actually it's pretty standard for an advanced college hitter of Alvarez's ability. Matt Wieters started his pro career at Class A+; also from the 2007 draft, Matt LaPorta started his career in the lower levels but began the season after he was drafted in Class AA, and Beau Mills also started in the lower levels and played the ...
