Phil Hughes disposed of the Oakland Athletics in 28 pitches last night. It’s about the same amount that Joba Chamberlain needs to get through about two thirds of an inning. All year we have talked about Joba to the bullpen, but many, including me, never thought much of Phil Hughes. Not ...

... feels something inside but might show it in different ways. He’s been really good. He’s taken this role and really ran with it. He comes out with a lot of confidence and really good stuff every night."
And that’s my point. If Hughes isn’t the perfect guy to take over for Rivera when his contract expires after the 2010 season, I don’t know who is. I would take his even-keel approach over a fist-pumper any day.

Phil Hughes and Bullpen
Mike Silva's New York Baseball Digest —
... wrote earlier today why Phil Hughes should remain a permanent fixture in the Yankees bullpen. You can read the details, but Campione cites the short stints for improving his velocity and eliminating underdeveloped secondary pitches. The rationale, Billy points out, could be an argument for any starting pitcher going into the bullpen. I have thought about this a lot since Hughes has successfully taken over the eighth inning role. I am a huge proponent of a “lock down” bullpen, but even I think it’s way too soon to give up on the 23 ...

Phil Hughes A Reliever?
nybaseballdigest.com 7/3/2009 — In 1995, when Mariano Rivera was a rookie, he came to the big club from the minors as a starter. The results were mixed, to be kind. In 10 starts, batters hit .306 of Rivera and 8HRs to the tune of a 5.94 ERA. The following year, new manager Joe Torre put Rivera in the pen. Rivera responded by ...
Does Hughes Belong in the Bullpen?
slidingintohome.blogspot.com 7/21/2009 — I know I've lost plenty of people right off the bat with the title but its something you have to consider with him being as good as he's been in the bullpen. Especially since he has not been good at all as a starter. It looks like we're heading into a repeat of the Joba Chamberlain debate. Does ...

lennysyankees.com 7/24/2009 — Phil Hughes recorded his first career save last night after tossing two perfect innings in relief with a three-run lead. Hughes Real Jewl of the Bronx
nybaseballdigest.com 7/27/2009 — Phil Hughes has enjoyed quite the roller coaster ride since being drafted by the Yankees in 2005. "None," Cashman said ...
