USS Mariner does the math and decides that $20 per year for the next five years is a bargain for Ichiro Suzuki .
How To Give Kasten Heartburn

You simply show him that giving a player $20 million per year sometimes makes sense. This is the kind of number-crunching roster analysis that I wish I could do. Just great stuff, walking you through the process and explaining it in simple language without burying everything in numbers. And in the end, it's a convincing case. Even if it makes Uncle Teddy's eye spasm as he reads it.

... No question, the NBA salary system isn’t ideal. But strangely he tries to tie Lewis’ situation to Ichiro’s, which is totally different. One HUGE difference between Rashard Lewis and Ichiro is in their marketability. Dave Cameron over at USS Mariner wrote a great post a short while ago on Ichiro’s new contract being a bargain considering his relative value to his peers. Perhaps wisely, he didn’t try to quantify the off-field economic impact Ichiro also brings to the club as its most highly marketable player, choosing to state his case between the lines. ...
The Bible, David, Samson vs. natural selection

... Samson opined: "It'll take the sport down, that contract. Right back to the ridiculous contracts. It can't be … Well, sign Ichiro to a 20 million a year for five years it's a joke, it's inexcusable, it's complete mismanagement. It can't be true." If you’re wondering why the Marlins' goodwill account is so deep into overdraft, well, there's the first exhibit. The deal isn't a joke. The Mariners understand a few things that Samson does not. Ichiro is both an asset and investment for the Mariners; one that has, and will continue to pay, dividends to the organization. Leaving aside the strict market value of the deal, which U.S.S. Mariner thinks is a bargain , this is an investment at another level. It’s an investment for the fans. In recent years, the M’s have had some spectacular, inner-circle Hall of Fame talent on their roster. One problem: They couldn’t hold on to it. Randy Johnson wanted to play closer to home ...
Community Projection: Ichiro

... A (suck) lot (it) of (Dave) people (Samson) expressed surprise and amazement upon hearing of the size of the extension - $90m over five years is a ton of scratch - but where I'm typically one to lambast such enormous contracts, I find Ichiro's deal to be just about perfect. Dave already made the case at some length several months ago that it's a great contract, so that's the place to go for a detailed review. If you don't have that kind of time or patience, though, here's the bottom line: Ichiro's total offensive production compares favorably to that of ...
