If The Mets want to win in 2009 (flag)

Dropping Pedro, El Duque, Alou, and Oliver Perez will drop the mets $32 mil below last year's payroll. Add declined options like Easley ect. and they go in down about $37 million.

Trade 1: David Wright to Minnesota for Fransisco Liriano, Joe Nathan, and cash.

I could argue endlessly about how David Wright not having a single after August big hit in his whole career but won't. instead I'll point out that Nathan is the best statistical closer in the league and Liriano is a top young ace pitcher. Add the cash that Minny will have to throw in addition, this leaves the Mets total down $37 mil (still).

Deal 2: Throw a 6 y 120 mil type contract at mark teixera. down 17 mil from last year.

Deal 3: Deal Delgado to the Orioles for Melvin Mora who will hit 6th and play third. down 20 mil from last year

Deal 4: Trade Heilman, Evans, Parnell, and Church to the white sox for dye and matt thornton. down 14 mil from last year

Deal 5: Trade castillo, schoewenweis, and sanchez to arizona for eric byrnes and chad qualls. Down 11 mil from last year.

Deal 6: Sign orlando hudson for like 3 y 21 mil. Down 4 mil from last year.

Deal 7: Sign David Weather to captain the pen for 3 to 4 mil per year. Payroll even.

This whole twisted plan will never happen because the Mets are to bullheaded, short sited, and needlessly smitten with david wright to pull this off but if they did, they would have.

santana, Pelfrey, Liriano, maine, Niese/stokes in the rotation

Nathan, Qualls, Weather, thornton, feliciano, joe smith, kunz/stokes in the pen

and reyes, hudson, beltran, teixera, dye, mora, murphy/byrnes, castro/schneider as a lineup

and endy, tatis on the bench in addition.

with holt and kunz and niese as top young pitching prospects  and murphy planted in the outfield and not first base long term with fernando martinez still waiting in the wings.

I know I will get hate for this story, but I wanna know what you all think!

Many closers, few takersMajor League Baseball News 12/8/2008
Closers this offseason are in a unique position of there being many readily available on the market, but few teams willing to spend a lot of money to acquire them -- giving the Mets, the one team that does have the financial resources, a huge advantage.
